Title: Head unit/CD changer/steering controls
Post by: Welung666 on 12 October 2008, 13:27:08
On my 96 Elite estate I have the original steering wheel without the radio controls. I also have a POS sony head unit (cassette type) and no changer so ultimately no display in the MID. Now would it be possible to fit a later steering wheel/head unit/CD changer without much hassle or am I going to get a headache trying to get it set up this way?

Ta muchly again.

Lee.

Not sure how much you would have to fit to get steering wheel controls, sorry.

DOes the HU have changer control?

Pretty sure as well the loom will be missing the controls - so if you want to experiment make sure you get the loom as well

Not got a HU yet, hence the question. Wanted to know if it would be hard to add wheel controls, probably too much of a headache but I'll look for a HU and changer and a later wheel with controls and loom, see what I can do :y

The HU in the car atm is a pos Sony cassette thingy with no changer, it doesn't even remember the station (I'm guessing the perm + and SW + are back to front as per normal VX wiring) and I'm looking forward to tossing it out of the window whilst travelling at excessive speed along a motorway  ;D

If your steering wheel has no controls, a cheaper option for the Sony would head unit be to find a old RM-X4s wired joystick and stick it on the side of the steering cowling - probably less than a fiver on fleabay

 ;)

It's not that Dave, it's the fact it's a Sony!  ;D I just want to burn it! I'd rather have a standard VX system in keeping with the year of the car.

Yes it is the wiring

I have a Sony HU but it was not cheap

Got a sc804 and CDC1 with loom here if interested...its what should have been in the elite in the first place...although dont think it works in conjectionwith steering controls...although might do as I know my CDR500 does in the tourer and I think its got the same connection...
