Title: Odd question for Carin Sat nav...
Post by: JonArgraig on 19 October 2008, 17:41:09
I know the system was used in a few motors over the years but if I was to use the "Brain" in a diffren make of car, would the speed pluse been a diffrent amount over a fixed distance make a difference?

The pluse is of the same wave form just about 800 pluses a mile diffent.

I was thinking does the speed pluse only work to tell the Carin it's "moving" or does it use it as a true messure of distance?

The speed pulses are vital - remember that Carin uses speed pulses, direction (ie reverse or forward) and gyroscopes as its primary locator, sats being secondary.

So the "Brain" is pre set to expect a set number of a given distance... mmm

Might have to re think this one

If you have a look in the Installation and Calibration menu you will find that you can either enter a different set of pulses or simply program it to go on a self calibration "Drive" of around a few miles or so.

Yes, the speed pulses are vital, but they were certainly NOT dedicated to the Vauxhalls, and you can use either speed pulses direct from the car, or via an external speed pulse generator.

As long as you know which pin the speed pulse should be on, and connect it to something that pulses as you mode, the system can be calibrated around it !!

 ;)

In my mis spent youth I spent alot time playing with verious taxi meters and the good old Vas Car system, it's just not too sure if I can calibrate the carin to some thing else...

I'll have a look in the menus tomorrow, any one remeber the pin code for the carin?

Dont recall seing a calibration option in there...

Wonder if it learns, as it still uses sats as secondary locator  :-/

99% of aftermarket sat Navs have that feature, 50% will allow you to enter in a customer calculated pulse count, Blaupunkts ask you to drive a preset distance, but have never yet encountered one that has a preset pulse count alreay entered.

The CARIN should ask you to drive for a while at a steady speed and will give a task bar indicator of its progress towards calibration as you go along

It will then compare the distance travelled by pulses and GPS  and the disances travelled on the software map, and calculate your speed pulse accordingly.

I've checked there is no calibration option...

guess I'll have to try and see :)

It`l be in there somewhere, many years since Ive played with carin, but look for Installation, Calibration, or New on the menu`s.

However,
Worst case scenario, try simply driving it for 20 mins, it may even update itself automatically - (most do - cant remember for all versions of Carin) But they had to do this for changes of wheel size etc etc.

Make sure that it knows its location before you start, and a good half hour switched on with a clear view of the sky is a good head start as it can receive gps location data and work out where it is (wait for 4 sats minimum), then just go for a drive, it will throw a wobbly to start with, but will update itself as you go along and will work out its own relationship of speed pulse to distance as it plots the distances on the map.
