my home dvd player has component(i think i mean composit, the red yellow and white plugs) input. Do the portable in car(smaller jobs) have the same? Im thinking n95 tv out to component in to dvd to head unit to cid... To give tom tom on cid with traffic and speed cameras and all the rest. If the standard head unit cant deliver traffic, then to me on the m4, well its useless really... Got to be a way....

what format is the cid input? I have had this explained to me but i have forgoten and i cant find the original thread.

IIRC, the cid needs RGB and separate Horizontal and Vertical sync signals. I remember seeing an article (in German) about fitting an external input.
A SCART plug would be the best source of these signals. The component signals (mini-din connector like a PC keyboard) are separate luminance and chrominance signals so without converting them back to RGB they're no use. You'll probably have to knock up a circuit to separate the composite sync signal into separate H and V sync.

Yes, sounds about right. 400 euros iirc.
So thats whats needed to patch into it, but whats the original format/language it uses now. Is it can-bus?.... what ever the hell that is....
So what this all means is, if i want traffic on the cid i have to get the cid converted to rgb horizontal and vertical and pay 400 sobs to some german fella to do it?
Ps i know some people have been through this with me before but a. Ive forgoten half the details and b. I want to make sure there really is no other easier cheaper way ...

Questions:
1) Are we retaining the original head unit?
2) EXACTLY what do you want displayed on the CID.
As for the comms, the low level stuff is via CAN, the colour map info is via a switched RGB feed with seperate H and V sync.

Are we talking about the same thing? Feeding an external video signal into the CID?
Not sure where traffic info. comes into it. TBH, if you want extra facilities in the sat nav area I would go and buy a TomTom - although the traffic info. they deliver is not worth the bother, IME. I drove from Hampshire to Scotland and back with it enabled and it warned me of several sets of roadworks that were non-existent in reality and a couple more caused serious congestion but not a murmur from the TomTom.
A traffic master might be the best bet. At least the info is allegedly based on the reality at the time you're driving rather than out-of-date info on a server somewhere that no-one has updated for days.

I suspect that if you were to select the MAP option then you could feed whatever RGB signal you fancied into the CID and it would display it!

As for the question about what you can connect.
Here are teh key requirements for the TFT display.
1) It needs an RGB source
2) It needs componet sync (H and V)
So, you need to consider your source carefuly, what output does it have, if its RGB does it also have componet so the sync can be extracted or is it RGsB where teh sync is part of the G signal.
Either way, you would then need to split out the H and V signals, this is easy with the likes of an LM1881.

i have tomtom on my phone which i use day to day for traffic on the m4. I dont really need the sat nav as such, i know where the m4 goes. What i need is an idea of the traffic on it, so if bad i can in take back roads, no problem there. It just seems stupid to have the phone on the dash with tomtom on it and not be able to view it on the cid which is bigger which has its own sat nav which i cant use for traffic as its not supported. Same as it seems silly to by a tomtom and have that on the dash next to the phone which is next to the cid. How pikey is that? In the absence of any traffic from the built in sat nav on my 2015(see my other post on this page.) the next best thing would seem to me to...
To answer your guestion finally.... Run tomtom on the phone via tv out via composite cable(came with the phone) to, either the head unit to cid if it has an aux in, then to cid, or directly to cid itself as you suggested. The phone will display whats on its screen(tv, video, mp3,mp4, internet or in this case tomtom with traffic and speed camera allerts!no chance of these 2 on the built in sat nav system ) to any tv with a suitable input, question is how to get the cid to accept the signal from the phone.?
I went through this about 9 months ago and Jamie said he considered it not worth the agro, and he hates nokias anyway, gay and all that. But mentioned that he had toyed with the idea of a dvd player to cid. And i presume, and my memory fails me again, he thought that may be easier. So i thought ok, plug the phone, with tomtom into the dvd then, and get tomtom traffic on the cid that way.
Basically i find rather pants(or even possibly, slightly gay? :-) ) that a built in sat nav system is not traffic capable, i can do without speed camera allerts, but for me, the traffic is worth some buggering about.
You get the idea?

Then there is two options.
1) Add a circuit board to the CID with a set of video switches to select the input there.
2) Add an external swicth to the CID RGB feeds to select the input and put the NCDC2015 in Map mode before switching over.

Would be nice but far simpler to dish the audio off to aux amp as your input device will be able to provide line level outputs. The line level input on the head unit will be mono for phone/trafficmaster etc.

If it helps, I need to get the reminents of those 2 CIDs to you. One of the LCDs is intemittent, the other has a split ribbon.
