Just replaced the battery in my Omega, I noticed that the new one has a plastic bung in one end which if I remember correctly is where you can clip an acid expansion tank on the side?
I know my old Vectra had this fitted but was wondering if it needs to be fitted or not? I would assume that it's only in extreme circumstances that the acid would need to escape?

Acid expansion tank? Never heard of such an animal...
Closest I can imagine on things mechanical is an overflow/vent outlet on a motorbike battery. You normally attach a length of plastic hose down the frame to exit under the bike in the area of the centre stand, never heard of the same on a car....... :-/

Here you go, item no 22.
Just read the text, 'for hot climate modification'..... I guess it's of no use in this country then!!!

The MX5 has an overflow pipe from the battery vent down under the car. battery is in the boot so the likelihood of hydrogen / oxygen buildup if it vents is probably the main reason. Acid spillage causing boot floor corrosion is another, although the OEM battery is an AGM type so that's less likely. Under a bonnet things are much better ventilated so it's not required.

I was thinking along the similar lines to the motorcycle vent tubing that goes through the bike frame, and wondered if in these days of Green hippy tree huggers, if a tube venting gas to the atmosphere was allowed any more, and maybe this expansion tank is designed to meet some form of environmental criteria rather than actually doing anything usefull ?

Could be. Maybe Hydrogen and Oxygen have been discovered to be greenhouse gases these days? ;D
Could always vent it into the intake manifold like we do with charcoal canisters.
