I have exactly the same problem, switch on heated rear window, and FM crackles like a bag of crisps. ANY IDEAS?

Both saloons I'm guessing? The ariel is integrated into the rear window so when it's switched on it's wiping you reception out. There is a thread in the ICE section about this very issue, bu66ered if I can find it though ;D

Check the connections to the rear heated screen, failing that check the conenctions and 0V (chassis) connection on the aerial amp unit.

I was once told by a Vx Mech, that this was a known problem by Vx and it was something to do with a device in the boot area!!!!! now I really can't say much more than that, if its true or not and what the device is either!!!!!! :-? :-? :-/ :'(

My advice, if a Vx mechanic ever says anything to you just smile and nodd politely!

Then find a pinch of salt!

Particularly round Nottingham which seems to have the most piss poor dealers on the planet!

If it was a knwon problem it would be a regular failure.....and its not a regular failure so it cant be a known problem  :y

As for failure on a car witha  roof maounted aerial, its often the aerial cable where it connects to the rear of the radio and most commonly occurs if the original unit has been replaced with an aftermarket item.

Yep, see my reply to that thread. If the window is arcing due to either a poor electrical connection to it, or a break in a track, it has the potential to cause interference even if the screen is not acting as an antenna. The interference will be picked up by the radio antenna which is still not a million miles from the rear screen.

Original unit installed. I will have a play around when the weather is a little better( it's freezing in Nottingham), and report the outcome. Cheers guys.

I have a 1995 3.0 Elite with the original SC 804 head unit & a roof mounted aerial. The radio reception isn't too great on it so I'm interested in this topic as well.

I always thought that the radio booster is in the rear shelf along with the amp for the speakers. Could I be thinking wrong then?
