I bought one of thoses cassettes with the ipod wire , works well for what I need it for , not sure if the steering wheel controls are affected though ? The cassette was bought from the well known auction site :-X , very cheap I seem to remember , hope this helps

if you upgrade to an aftermarket h/u you can get iPod connectivity, adaptor to keep steering controls. Will lose the use of screen, but is that really a problem. The check controls will still work etc.

Use a high quality modulator, not the £5 fleabay ones, but a decent £50 one that the Professional Audio installers use, and that way you can retain every function of your existing setup, and still have some fairly respectable sounds through the FM radio.

A modulator is a tiny Radio transmitter

so if I go aftermarket (which I am tempted to) which screen functions do I lose, just radio/CD??

Yep. Display of radio station / CD track and also update of the clock by RDS.
