Title: ooops, smoke from my alternator

another day, another problem  :'(

noticed the battery light glowing dim in the dark with the keys out over the past few days  :'(

driving home yesterday, pulled up and noticed a bit of smoke coming out from around the chuffin alternator.

looks like the tinkers had it  :'(

is they a ........... "how too" on here or any shortcuts or advice anybody has would be appreciated  :y

That's it I'm afraid. Once you've let the smoke out of your wiring loom you're preety much goosed ...... http://www.mez.co.uk/lucas.html

now i know why my old man always refaired to a hammer as a enginers screwdriver  ;D ;D

im in hull mate  :y

down to removing the last bolt ( top one )  :y

spanner on the front and about 5 combinations of universal / flexy / extention / step down - step up / ratchet on it.  lol

then it starts to rain  :'(

how i love my miggy  ;D

Wouldnt be the firs time I've had to get the brollie out to work on a car.Lol The neighbours find it rather amusing, ( we all love the british weather.) :D

Right, all joking aside.....if your alternator was emitting smoke then just swap it for a new one (or exchange unit).
Given the cost versus your time posting here versus the fault finding time if you want to go down to component level, it's not worth pi$$ing about with IMO.

Most places that offer exchange units will throw the removal/fitting in for free...so if anything else is goosed then they will find it anyway before you lay out your hard earned (at least, any company worth it's salt will find any potential fault).

Its rare for an alternator on an Omega to smoke!

Get a good second hand one....dont pay the robbing prices of poorly reond ones as they are pretty reliable units (just make sure teh ebarings are smooth)

thanks for the answers lads, pulled one off my old saloon im breaking on sunday ( once the rain stoped  :y )

stripped it down on the lounge table sunday night too find the regulator had started to melt hence the battery light on the dash on 24/7 and the smoke  :'(

fitted it yesterday ( again in between the rain   :y)

everything ok now  :y

also swaped the dual ram system of my saloon.  question on that on the other section about that
