Title: Battery light / Altenator light
Post by: Oddnine on 11 June 2009, 10:36:36
Vauxhall Omega 2.6 V6 2001

 :-/  Hi can anyone help?

I was driving home the other day and the battery light came on. I know this is the altenator light but the car still starts and I am sure it has not affected the car in any other way yet, has anyone had this problem, should i be worried?  :o

Do have or access to a multi-meter? You should be getting almost 14 volts across the battery terminals if you alternator is charging as it should be, if your light is on I suspect you're not actaully charging your battery.

The lights come on for a reason, or as suggested something is intermittant, I would go down the Voltmeter route first to make sure its not over charging let along charging.

Get a price from your local VX Masterfit and work down from there.

The alternator on SWMBO's Astra was £160 from a local auto electrican.

Before you buy a new alternator, check your local autospark for a price to re-furbish your own. There's not much in there that normally fails, diode pack & brushes, and they're not too expensive on their own.
