Title: Towbar Electrics, Question
Post by: Squealey on 27 June 2009, 17:16:17
Hi All

Fitted a towbar a few weeks back but have only just got round to hitching the caravan up and testing it all out.

Got a problem. No brake lights and no side lights on the O/S.

I used a wiring diagram I got from the fella I brought the towbar from which he had made whilst he was dismantling it. I cut the cables at the plug behind the plastic panel in the boot and connected from there.

I just don't have any power going to these particular cables (the black and yellow is the brake)

What could be the cause of that? As far as I can see the black and yellow cable doesn't go into anywhere there could be a break.

I have put the 20A fuse in the towbar/permanant live in the fuse box.

Please could someone give me a clue where I need to go now!!!

Thanks Very Much

Wayne

Sorted the side light issue, just the brake lights now!

I also had that problem when I fitted my towbar.  ::)

Instead of taking the power from the cut wires from the plug. Take it from the wires which lay along the bottom/rear of the boot  :y

There is a bulb failure sensor which must be added to the circuit for the brake lights. It sits in a socket which on my facelift was located behind the glove box. look for an empty 4 pin relay socket with 2 black and yellow wires. Bridge the black and yellow wires with a short section of cable with 2 spade connectors on and bob's your uncle.

This caught me also, failed test while collecting trailer  :-[

Put temporary bridge into rear brake light feed which worked but replaced it with correct fix (wire bridge) once I knew about it.

I didn't know that about the bridge.
Is the 4 pin relay socket easily accessible  ;) :y

The relay socket can be difficult to locate. It is behind (and above) the glovebox which usually means the removal of the glovebox to gain access.  :-/

Hi All

Thanks very much for your help, ended up stripping the glovebox and vent off, nice job that is.

Now got a full complement of lights on the caravan, wey hey :) :) :)

Its one of those things that if this forum didn't exist I would ever have found the answer too, Thanks :y :y

I am going to be fitting my Towbar soon, will this 4 pin relay fit behind the glovebox, or is there a special one ?
