Title: LED - Fail!
Post by: pedroMV6 on 10 October 2009, 19:31:40
I bought some nice blue LEDs for my MV6 from a guy on ebay, so set to fit them today.
Clocks out - check.
Old bulbs out - check.
New LEDs in - erm, no. The ones for the clocks were too long, so physically wouldn't go in!
Tried the smallers ones for the MID - they fitted and worked OK, but merely glowed a faint green colour.

Fired off an email to the guy, asking if I';d done summat wrong, or need to change anything and got this as a reply:
"Hello Peter
I am sorry for this i have to say i have not tried these in an Omega speedo only in vectra
As for the blue leds ligting green it would seem your facelift has yellow filters in MID
Please return leds for full refund
Best regards
Michael
www.crazyleds.co.uk"

So credit to him, he's gonna refund the money - bet he doesn't want to refund the p&p though - yet the ad clearly stated they were for Omega.
Why do people do this? >:(

I'm sure the ordinarly LEDs would work just fine in the clocks, as they are not as long as these works of art............

Our lass was looking forward to having green LEDs in her Elite, so two of us are disappointed now!

*RANT OVER*

Refitted standard bulbs and although the MID lights up OK, the clocks don't - HELP!!!!! :-[

Each to their own.

Just be aware they don't work too well generally in Omega's, which rely quite a lot on light pipes, which LED's cannot properly illuminate.
Also they dont work well on the dimmer circuits, which not only causes brightness issues, but also has been known to prematurely blow the headlight switch unit.

Most of the dash LED kits (proper ones) have a plastic diffuser fitted to them so the light does go down the fibreoptic pipes ok, although I have heard the do tend to burn out the dimmer switches quite quickly.
Failing that you could just buy some clear enammel paint and paint the normal bulbs (I have done this on mine, so the dials now glow orangey red) and have had no problems so far  :).

This courtesy Passat has a lot of red back lights for switches & the dash. I personally prefer the white/yellow of the Vauxhalls, less 'Chav/Scally' like.  ;)

I know about the dimmer issues, but only have mine full on anyway.

I'm on with it, and will try to sort this yellow filter in the MID and see it will come out.
Anyway, back to Bathurst Live on Motors TV............. :y

LED full, and bulb full are very different things.

There are pics somewhere, but some of the blue can be very dazzling at night.

(im not having a go by the way, just know many people have tried this and not been happy with the results, blue dash and instruments may be nice in principal (if you like em), but most people dont seem to get the look they wanted)

If the seller is a company they are liable under law for the P&P you paid and the return Postage for you to send them back.

you should of got the micro led bulbs, get them at most car parts shops, they are smaller and work better, and for you MID one to show up blue need the ultra blue LED's they are more Blue, nok's out the yellow so shows up blue. :y

LEDs do not really work in the Omega, as it simply wasn't designed for it.

Leaving aside questionable sexuality (;D), the issue is the narrow angle (which diffusers dont really cure) and that blues are all ultrabrights.  The end result is a poorly illuminated dash, and unreadable MID (particularly during daylight), and centre console/climate switches/window switches being dazzlingly bright at night.

The end result just isn't successful

These are some 270 degree wide-angle thingsamabobs, supposed to be the nuts, but they're simply too long to fit the clockset.
Another supplier can help out, but as said, they need to be the ultrabright type. The yellow diffuser would really need removing in the MID, I think, and I wasn't going to attempt the climate/heater lights or switches.
Some of the red LEDs in my Carlton - installed in the switches - are far too bright, so I hear what you're saying there!

I'm not sure what to do now, as I really like the blue effect in my Carlton and wanted this in the Omega, but might leave well alone..........

Said this before but Blue is the worst color for Dash lighting. VW should never have gone this way.
Because of the wavelength of the blue light the eyes are slower to refocus from near to far-read not safe!.
Why do you think nearly every other car manufacturere over all these years has only ever used white, green or orange/red.
Personally I would want to fit Leds but would go "Ice White", so the Dash wouldn't look as dingy as the dull lighting miggys have currently.

Think I've sorted it now - the guy at crazy led's has done some digging, so we'll see what happens. He has said that I would need to remove the yellow filter in the MID, but after taking the back off it this morning, I'll pass!

Same here, find the dash and CID too bright at night otherwise.

This car had also had 5w bulbs fitted which I changed for the correct 3w ones, 5w far too bright IMHO

I bought a full dashboard set from ebay,Ok paid £17.00 inc post which may be a bit ott but everything now has a nice warm red glow,a bit like old Bmw's.I work nights so this time of year my lights are on for over 8 hours at a time. so far no problems at all with the dimmer switch.
Before i bought these i was warned some LED don't like dimmer switches and burn out quickly.

These are what I think would be better for fit and wattage..

Gonna leave the MID bulbs well alone.

Sorry, I can't seem to get the pics to work on here :-[

I got a bit of experience with LED's from this site. The bloke that runs the site is very helpful. He's a member on VVOC.com. I got a full dash kit for my Veccy and it was spot on. If its any help i don't know, but the LED's used behind the speedo and RPM clocks in the vec are these https://www.crazyleds.co.uk/product.php?productid=163&cat=67&page=1

Im using the same kit to do my omega over the weekend. The above LED sits in the bigger of the bulb holders, and is more than capable of lighting all it needs too. And it looks S**T HOT at night. I went for white, and was well impressed

It might be too late, but i'll let you know how i get on with it when i do it

I thought those would be a bit too bright for me, so opted for the 1W ones.

I have thought about Ice White, but really prefer blue, although I just might look for some orange ones, yet!
The missis like the idea of green LEDs cos her Omega is green - I tried those painted bulbs in hers, and for a week or two it looked good, but the paint burnt off. Have to say that the green looked kinda relaxing!

did you cook the bulbs in oven for about 15mins, cos that what i did ad they never burnt off, and should never be used on high beam lights can set on fire,
