Title: ECU swap proposed. Comments please ..........
Post by: I_want_an_Omega on 07 November 2009, 18:18:15
Ok, bear with my reasoning here please guys .....

Current car = '98 CD V6 Auto etate. 1 key, no passcode  :'(
Donor car = '98 CDX V6 Auto saloon. 2 keys, with passcode  :y

In order to get the 2nd key and passcode, I'm planning to swap the bits between the 2 cars, and have salvaged the following:

ECU, gearbox ECU, Immobiliser ECU, Ignition key barrel, 2 keys with chips & remotes, remote/alarm ECU, drivers door lock.

The only bit I don't have is the estate tailgate lock barrel.

So, my logic is to disconnect the battery, and swap the ECU's and ignition barrel over. Reconnect that battery and see what happens. If all is ok then I'll dismantle the drivers door & swap the lock.

All that will leave me with is the tailgate lock - which is never used  - so I'll just keep the single key - probably in the car for that.

The chassis numbers of both current and donor vehicle are very close, they were registered within a few days of each other in Nov '98.

I'm hoping that if anything goes horribly wrong I can just swap it all back again - with the battery disconneted of course.  :-/

So, any comments welcome.

is the ECU number the same, as i know there are two types and they have a dif connetshion on the ECU, one is a left locator and other is a right,

yes, I've checked all that obvious stuff ..........

If your ultimate objective is a second key (and not fussed about passcode) I may have a third option.

I`m currently playing around with Fiat ECU`s at the moment, as the transponder circuits fail at an alarming rate, and we are re-programming the ECU immobilisation circuits and switching them off as mobile units for the garages so that the car can at least be driven back to the garage for repair using the key with the transponder turned off by simply plugging in another ecu.

Let me have any numbers you can from your ecu and I can take a look to see if possible with the Omega one. If my theory is correct, all you would then need to do is plug in an ecu and get a blank key cut - and obviously tell your insurance company you have no immobiliser fitted - or fit a seperate one to comply.

 :-?

Thanks, I'll take a look .........

ecu, immobiliser ecu, and transponders needed.

If you need remote, then alarm ecu as well

So, as I have the complete set then it should be straightforward I'm assuming?

Do the chips come out of the keys easily enough? As I see the lock barrel swap as being a phase 2 activity.

Transponders pull out easy. Very easy - hence why so many people lose them!

All that said, a blank key inc transponder (but not remote) is £11 iirc from oof shop.  And programming isn't expensive if you see my sig ;) - could save a lot of messing around....

or as you have old transponders (which can be reused) and old remotes (also reusable), just buy the blank key without transponder...

I don't have the passcode for the single key vehicle - but do for the one with 2 keys etc?

Do I need the passcode? I dont have the key number either  :-/

Ah, yes, carpass would be needed.

So swap all 3 ECUs then ;D

Do you have a number for the ECU at all ?

The other thing is that my current chassis number wasn't recognised by Mark DTM's Tech2 as being an auto - which kind of screwed up my proposed gearbox upgrade.

He hasn't got back to me on that one - so my logic was that I might have more luck with the other set - if you can see my train of thought on that?

Right, sorry about the delay, here are the numbers from ECU sticker on the 2.5 V6 Auto, '98 MY:

From the top

980702        26SA4475
86702          1763 0078

0 261 203 588 followed by 810 in small writing

GM 90 492 382

B95001   86702 0076

They are all on a Bosch sticker having large letters HH in the bottom right hand corner.

Hope this helps and sorry for delay in reply.

Regards .......... Rob

Thanks - I`ll go and do a bit of research   ;)

Sorry, unable to turn off the immobiliser on that one

 :'(

However, I can retrieve the Vehicle Pin Code (PUK) from the aerial around the ignition barrel though if that is of any help? But you would need to send it over to me, for me to read it.

If you have 1 transponder, selotape transponder to immobiliser aerial ::) - saves having to progra more keys.

Dave, interested in how that works, implies the immobiliser transmits the through aerial?

If you have a look at that aerial, you will see a small surface mount chip - and amongst other info it contains, is also the vehicle PUK code.

The aerial recognises the transponder key, obviously, but is also paired to the ecu and various other parts of the car, which is why its difficult to change the aerial ring on its own, without the paired ecu. the ECU needs to receive the data from teh aerial with regard to the transponder as well as the pairing code from the aerial, and only then does it turn off the immobiliser.

Hope that confuses you further  ;)

That's very useful Dave - thanks for that.

It certainly gives me more options re operating the car that's for sure.

How long would you expect to take to access the code - i'm thinking about if the car was in Paignton rather than by post. Could it done on a while you wait basis? I get down to Preston every now and then so could pop over.

The problem I still have however (which is actually nothing to do with keys and the ECU swap) is that my chassis number isn't recognised by Tech2 as being valid for a desired gearbox software upgrade. So, it may be that that becomes the factor re the ECU swap rather than anything to do with keys - if you see my logic?

I haven't forgotten about that CCR8ooo BTW - that's planned for next weekend as part of a list of jobs to do!

Thanks .............. Rob

Probably only a couple of hours work tops - but if you are over this way at any time, give me a yell anyway
