Post by: des.allen on 20 November 2009, 18:02:18
Has anyone any ideas of how to improve the reception on the in built car phone, i am using 02 and the reception is really bad, but when im using my mobile the reception is really good in areas where i have no signal whatsoever on the car phone,  thanks in advance :)

Only thing I can think is that there's an interruption in the wiring to the aerial :-/ :-/

Mine's on Vodafone and has a decent signal even when normal mobiles struggle :y :y

I take it that its a CCRT700?

Have you checked obvious things like joints in the cable from the roof aerial. If they are loose or water get in then that can be a problem. Has the problem suddenly got worse?

Thanks for the replys :) I havent had the car long, but the little stumpy mast had been played with and the metal internal part had been cut, so i have managed to get a replacement 'fix all vauxhall aerial masts' off the net ( The ones that are on newer vauxhalls that have the twisty bit for the last few inches, If you know what i mean)
It is about twice the size and is a little bit better but nothing worth shouting about.
All connections seem ok, unless there is more than one on each end?

If the aerial mast has been modified with an ebay special it will be a worse performer - the original aerial will be a correct proportion of the GSM 900 MHz wavelength, any modifications will render it out of proportion.

There are three joints in the antenna lead, one where the tail of the roof aerial is under the roof panel (about two inches from where the aerial goes through the roof), one on the right side kick plate by the drivers foot and one connector to the back of the head unit.

Classic error !!

By using one of the "internet" masts, I would bet that you have now replaced your GSM Phone aerial with an FM Radio Aerial mast.

Although they look similar externally, they are wound very differently. You will need to obtain a correct GSM aerial mast for your car - if Vauxhall cannot help, then I`m sure one of the excellent breakers here will be along shortly
