I did the mod replacing the wiper stalk with one with a variable control, however the delays were too great, from 7sec to 15sec between sweeps. After a bit of investigation, I discovered that the minimum time was set by a 3K9 resistor on the wiper relay ( K8, tall yellow, 2nd from the right in the fuse box, with 2 fuses attached to the holder). After some experiments, I found that if you replace the the 3K9 with a 1K it gives a minimum sweep time of about 3secs, eg delay of 1sec, which is a lot more usable.

Its a bit of a fiddle getting into the relay, but not impossible. Don't ram something in too far or you might damaged the relay which is close to the sides.
I wouldn't go much lower than 1K, the controlling IC isa a TY93029A which I have never heard of, but 1K shouldn't cause any harm. I measured the variable pot as going from 600R to about 5K, so should be a safe mod.

Is that what your settings where? Mine starts at 2/3ish seconds going up to about 10. On its fastest setting on intermittent yours was 7 seconds?

Hmm interesting. I didn't measure the before delay but it was prob about 5-6secs. The control resistance is in series so it should increase the sweep time, hence mine went to 7 secs min 15 secs max. If yours is 2/3 sec delay, that would suggest that your relay is not a delay one, or poss there is a different way of wiring up the variable resistor into the circuit.

I do think my elite was about 1 to 10 seconds (or more) on the variable.
But well done on a bit of proding - even a near physical match of resistor !!
Did you consider a programme type relay? Often wondered if these would just plug in as replacement [could be a though for my lowly cdx].

Its an old freescale part (formerly motorola)
I know if I was designing it then it would be little more than a set of comparators but it could be an ASSP

I actually traced the circuit out, ( but couldn't make any sense of it !) no sign of a cap with large resistor up to Vcc. There is a 100uF but it has a 220R up to Vcc, (Power in ?) so not much there. I don't know how they get the timing but I reconed that as a variable resistor in the "I" line (Black/Yellow wire) affects it, then the 3K9 which is in this line, is fair game hence my reducing it to 1K.
I am intrigued as how Tunnie's min is less than 1 sec as standard :-X

Hmm, I don't suppose the difference is because some Migs have a relay from a 2002 Astra which I think had the variable delay ?. Thats where my control came from. Unfortunatly my apparently legal version of TIS doesn't show any difference here, and has the wiring for the 2002 Mig wrong :'(

I wouldn't mind betting that there's a diferent delay relay for cars with and without the variable resistor in the stalk. One probably has that resistor sized to provide a sensible minimum delay, and the other to provide a sensible fixed delay.
Must admit, I miss having a variable intermittent wipe.
What stalk did you use on your conversion?

I bought a stalk and relay off fleabay and after fiddling with the wiring on my 2002 CDX and changing the relay under the bonnet have variable delay of 3 secs to 10 secs - is there any point in overcomplicating the modification of the relay - there are plenty of scrappers with the right relay in.

It adds an option to those who can tackle the modification, given a resistor costs a few pence then if you can use a soldering iron its simple. :y
