Just discovered I have no reversing lights in my manual estate (1999) I changed the bulbs to no effect. Is it likely to be some kind of switch? Help please, thanks.

Have you checked the fuse, no.15 it covers glove box light and fag lighter (15 amp) if not that it could be the switch on the gearbox not sure where it is but it will be sticking out the side somewere with a wires comming out. Someone else may know the exact location.

There is a switch on the gearbox you can change
awkward little git, needs an offset ring spanner to get at it.

bit more info....may save a few wasted lifts ....

22mm offset ring spanner needed :y
(and a new switch obviosuly)

sounds like switch on gearbox but always worth a look at the wiring in the boot between body and tailgate as reverse lights are on the tailgate hth
-
by any chance do you have a towbar with electrics?
If so it is very likely that the wiring is incorrect to the towbar electrics - hence reverse lights only work on caravan etal,

Sorry to hijack but i have a similer problem. I shift into reverse, no lights come on. Start moving backwards (as you do) then after aprox 2-3' of moving backwards then my reverse lights come on lol

thats a classic symptom of a gearbox switch failing

Same happens here, especially in winter [smiley=undecided.gif] must be the cold damp air.
Anyway sorted it with a squirt of WD40 on to the electrical connection that goes to the gearbox switch. Remove connector spray and replace :y
Still a bit sticky this winter, but may need another spray.
