Rusty - I've had a couple of batteries go, but at neither stage did the light begin to come on.

Alternator more likely than battery.

Probably got an air lock - did you bleed with heater controls set to hot?

forgot to say. Check connections at battery and alternator. Also volts across batt with engine running and essentials on. think it should be almost 14v.

diodes in the regulator on the way out mate  :y
it won't get any better so if you remove the alternator and get the serial number, you should be able to get a new one from your local auto electrician or motor factors. ( not halfrauds or vx )  :y
last one i bought cost me about a tenner  :y
easy anough to sort one the alternator is on the floor  :y
