Title: key wont turn in ignition?
Post by: ali on 27 December 2009, 18:25:14
Just tried to go out and the key will not turn in the ignition :o Neither will the spare. Just also found out that my son went out to the car tonight and unlocked it with the key, somthing I never do. He then put it in the ignition and HE said it wouldnt turn. Im not sure if he has done something to the immobiliser ::) or has the barrel just gone :( Any help would be great, if not will call out AA tomorrow.

Sounds like you might need a new ignition barrel. There is a guide on how to remove it, fairly straightforward. You can still secure the car with the barrel removed. A new one costs around £70 based on your vin number, next day.

It will not be using it in the door that has done anything, its meant to be used in the door, Also, not be imobiliser, key would still turn.
Have you only got one key?
Sounds like barrel has jammed up. Try it again gently, and take pressure of the steering lock by turning the steering wheel  slightly as you insert and turn the key. Try it a few times if it doesn't work at first.

Heres the link http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1213353737

But you can only carry out this procedure with the key moving freely in the ignition barrel. So remove the cowels and then fiddle the key in the barrel, hopefully it will eventually turn. At that stage remove the key and the barrel when exiting the car until you get a replacement.

wiggle wheel and turn key. If key does not turn the barrel is gooosed.  New one needed but you should be able to get it matched to the key

Might be worth spraying some penetrating fluid or wd40 into the lock and then wiggling the wheel from side to side as you try to turn the key. :-/

ok thanks, I have tried giving it a wiggle but no luck. Also sprayed wd40 but no good. I do have a spare key but that has never worked in the ignition, just door. I will go and try to remove it, but steering lock is on so not sure if I can get to screws :-? would the barrel out of my other estate fit?

i had a simailer problem when i got a new key,it would open the door lock but not the ing barrel.what i done was get a good quality screw driver and chip away at the ing barrel until all the tumblers were out then turn what was left of the ing barrel to poss two to extract the barrel,a drill might be better to undo the tumblers.

A slide hammer will easily have the barrel out (with NO damage to anything other than the barrel), which removes the lock, which in turn allows you to replace with new barrel.

I had one more go at trying to turn the key and with a little help from some Mazola cooking oil and a bit of a wiggle it moved :D :D so taken off the cowels and removed the old barrel ;D Im about to take it to pieces to see if I can fix it but thanks to Welung666  I have one in the post just in case its past it. So thanks everyone, again  :y :y :y :y :y

Nice one  :y What I did was to remove the igintion barrel with the key in it every time I parked up. I carried a small allen key with me. This was until I got a new ignition barrel.

Obvioulsy it depnds what's worn, key &/or barrel, but I've built barrels to fit a key ..... it's not too difficult, just requires time & patience.  :y  :y  :y  :y

While you've got the barrel out and the tumblers all visible, experiment with the in-out position of the key to see if there's a position slightly less than fully inserted where the tumblers all sit nice and flush with the surface.

On ours, simply inserting the key a couple of mm less than fully seemed to do the trick.  I wonder if the tumblers wear at the contact points with the key; then with key fully inserted, the tumblers fall too far into the notches in the key.  Pull the key out a tad, and the tumblers climb up the slopes adjacent to the bottom of the valleys, and end up nice and flush with the outside.

If this does turn out to be the case, just wrap something around the hilt of the key to stop it going in so far, jobsa gudun.

Don't forget to fettle up the inside of the lock bit as well as the corners of the tumblers that bear on that surface. Failed attempts to turn the key soon generate some burrs on that inside surface.

On a similar tack and, I think, what Andy b was hinting at....

If the barrel with pins is visible with key inserted, rather than withdrawing the key slightly, you could also file the parts of the lock flush with the housing, thereby 'customising' a (random) key/barrel to 'your' key, absolving you of the need for a differrent key for door locks and ignition....   ;)

I managed to get the key to turn, to get the barrel out, but since then I cannot get it to turn to take the barrel apart :( :( Ive tried lots of different positions of wiggling but so far it wont move. So if  Welung666 you have a matching door lock and thats easy to change :-? that maybe the answer. Neither of my keys work in the passenger door ::) and due to my location and need of 4 x 4 both estates are going on ebay very soon :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( so it would be good if door and ignition were the same key.

The barrel from  Welung666 arrived but with a different key to mine so imoboliser wouldnt fit :( So took both barrels apart, writing down the numbers and started to rebuild ::) ::) worked out I could use tumblers from both barrels to make one working one ;D ;D ;D ;D just used the numbers either side of the orignal order to allow for wear :D :D :D :D :D :D shame Ive run out of daylight, so will have to wait until tomorrow to fit back in the ignition.  :)
