Title: Electric Seat adjustment Problem
Post by: chrisgc on 21 January 2010, 11:28:13
Hi

I just bought a 98 Omega Elite - it has the electric adjusted seats.

Seats in general work fine.

Passenger moves far enough forward as it should do BUT the drivers side stops way to short of where it should be.

The guy I bought from was well over 6' so never an issue as it moves back fine but only moves forward partially.

I am guessing it must be a good 6 inches that its stopping short of where it should be.

What do i do as I was going to see if it would manually move forward with the tool supplied but sods law there is no tool.

All others movements work fine.

Whats the best way to diagnose this AND is there another tool preferably one I may have lying around my shed which I can use to manually bring the seat forward?

I need this to move forward urgently as its not safe to be driving this the way I am.

Your kind replies would be gratefully appreciated.

Chris

I have not had this issue my self, but I have seen other posts suggesting it may be a coin stuck in the runner. I have heard £1 coin is the favourite.

So worth trying to see if anything stuck in the rails.

HTH

Edit, dam dam dam, must type faster  :y

Check again - IT WILL BE A COIN !!

Really common fault, and because you have some electronic movement you can rule everything else out - the coins wedge themselves deep into the runners and can often take a few attempts to find them, but I`m almost certain that you will have one in there - everybody always does.

Just to let you know I cant find anything obstructing it.

Is there a tool I can use to manauly adjust the seat to come forward (as in the handbook) bear in mind tho that I dont have the original tool to wind seat out.

Also not sure but would it be easier for me to get the seat out to enable me to look closer as difficult access - again bearing in mind that because it wont move forward I cant access the star screws at the back of the seat.

Your help is urgently needed.

Regards
Chris

Seat removal is quite straight forward if you can move it forwards and backwards  :(
It is just four torx bolts into the floor and the wiring connectors to disconnect, if you have airbags in the seats it does become more complex as if you disconnect the seat airbag with battery connected it will register a fault and need a tech 2 session to clear it.

You may be able to unbolt it and just tilt it back with the wires connected if they are long enough.

Good luck.

Shouldn`t do - If you observe the airbag precautions before battery disconnection, disconnect battery, go and have a coffee for an hour, disconnect airbags, repair fault, refit airbags and observe any correct power up sequences, the airbag light should not even come on.

Only comes on when a fault is present when the system is live (and never ever work on it live)

Just to let you know I am still at the point of getting know where - so really need some more help.

I have looked and looked again and hovered but no coin - I can even see all the way through the runners to see if anything blocking it but nothing.

Of course at the moment I cant even get access to the two rear bolts to remove seat so I am really stuck at the moment.

I have tried a flat head screwdriver in the manual adjustement hole - even though I dont even know if I have right hole but a screwdriver does not seem to grab it enough to rotate.

What can I do as I have a car sat there.

Hi

All good news - I got the object out.

I managed to make my own cranking tool out of a normal socket set with a square ended screwdriver bit attached to end of socket.

Took ages but managed to get the seat forward enough for my correct seating position.

BUT when looking at the back of the drivers seat from the rear I saw a coin - picked it up and thought it was a foreign coin but on closer inspection it was the middle of a £2 coin.

And a closer inspection on the runner I saw the outer part (gold piece) of the coin.

I have yet to remove the outer part of coin as it was getting dark but seat now moves backwards and forwards.

I must have been turning and cutting the coin like a tin opener when I was cranking the seat manully.

For the life of me I could not see a coin prior to my discovery no matter how hard I looked.

Everyones suggestion has been greatly appreciated.

Thanks again,
Chris

Used to whip them out without disconnecting the battery - never, ever had a problem when re-installed! No lights, no Tech 2 or owt!

Airbags will not go off unless there is an impact to the car or power is directly applied to the airbag.

Hi just a quick note on Airbags, sorry if i sound anal about this.
Any electical charge can trigger an Airbag (even the static off your hair or clothes),
please handle them with care and store them safely,

Sorry for ranting  :-[
Cheers Box

ps. if you cant find anywhere suitable to put it whilst removed stick it under the car so it is in contact with the floor and is earthed

Then you are an idiot - and a very lucky one at that !

No need to apologise for imparting excellent safety advice

Treat the airbags with a bit of respect, be wary of them but no need to be afraid of them. Always store with cusion side upwards and always work on them with cusion side facing you, as if they do trigger, being kicked in the face by a balloon is far better than an imprint on your head of a nut and bolt and a manufacturers logo
