Title: Non-projector and projector headlamp shells
Post by: hoodjam on 19 February 2010, 13:54:14
Could someone please tell me if non-projector and projector headlamp shell are the same (pre-facelift) ?  I bought a pair of projector headlamp units from a member, and in transit to me, the height adjuster motor has broken off where it pushes into the shell, allowing the bulb assembly to float free, breaking its hinges. I'm asking as I use my car every day, so don't fancy removing its good but yellowed existing headlamp only to find its a no go.

Many thanks

I fitted Depo (pattern) projector headlights to my 1994 Omega after the original lights went yellow.

The leveling motors were quite easy to transfer from the old lights to the new ones. The washer stalks were a nuisance but I cannot remember why now (it was a few years ago).

All in all I think it took me a couple of hours to swap everything over.

Hi
To swap to projector lamps are any additional parts needed? was given an advisory last year at MOT for yellowed headlamps (amongst other things  :'( ) I guess they couldn't fail them as they had attempted to polish them only the previous year.

Take the fog lamp grill off, easy access to the bolt then ;)

It would appear that the pair I bought off of ebay are HID version despite not being described as such, I am beginning to get the impression that the projectors and the HID are the same shell. Unfortunately my car does not have the loom suitable for use with HID lamps, I am missing the 2 pin connection to the high voltage unit for a start.

Well I have managed to un-yellow the headlights using BRASSO, an old t-shirt, a rubber sanding block and elbow grease, whether it will be good enough to pass the MOT is another question as there are still crazed or hazy patches on the lenses.
I reckon I am going to sell the HID lights rather than try and fit them, making it a fully legal fit sounds like far too much hassle. If they do pass the MOT I may in the future consider replacing current lamps with regular projector lamps.
For now I need to save the pennies and replace all the shocks.

Trouble is, there is no law yet. DfT have made their stance known, so you know which way things are going....
