I'm a bit of LW, radio4 and irish rte radio(252khz, give it a listen, brilliant when youve sussed out the accent!!)
and they both worked perfectly in my old vw camper van, but in my cdx ccr2006, there is interference on long and medium wave when used in same geographical area as the vw.
is it possible to supress the electric noise on LW radio freqs that occurs when putting revs on? when the signal is strong it is fine'
for instance would attaching a suppressor somewhere help?

Not really - most audio manufacturers have now dropped LW capability from car audio equipment as it struggles to differentiate a signal over the interferance being generated by the electronics of the car.
Radio 4 on FM is a good if not excellent signal, but if you are a five live or cricket fan, then its down to the shops to buy a DAB receiver I`m afraid.

I get ignition interference on air band AM from the ignition system (no points for guessing why I'm listening to air band at the moment) ::).
It's more down to the poor susceptibility of an AM signal to interference, and the fact that the antenna is very poor at LW / MW frequencies.
Unless you're happy to start carving up the engine loom I wouldn't say it's worth trying to suppress. There is a suppression capacitor by the back of the coil packs but you're always going to get some interference to AM.
I don't suppose your camper was diesel (no ignition system)?

Hi Kevin, Thanks for reply... the camper is petrol2.1 injection, electronic ignition.... but the aerial is quite a big extenable rod at the front.......and the engine is in the back...

Could be that you just had that little bit extra margin of signal strength from a better antenna, combined with the interference source a few more metres away.
You don't say if yours is a saloon or an estate but on the saloon the heated rear screen is the antenna. Not only is it poor at the frequencies involved but it isn't very well isolated from the car's electrical system meaning noise can be conducted into the radio.
I guess an external antenna might help, but hardly worth the bother. DAB might be an answer, as said, but that'll probably mean mounting another antenna anyway.

I've had my Omega since Oct 95 and the LW and MW reception has always been totally useless unless stationary. So useless that the interference means that you can hear nothing at all of the broadcast

thanks for replies guys.... I was wondering if a in inline aerial amp can be fitted which might improve the signal to noise ratio? Driving under a bridge when the am lw sig goes altogether the mush goes ape... so I feel amplifying the signal may overpower the interference........
I imagine probably not, but you never know??

Chances are you will amplify both the signal and the noise, and it will make little difference, IMHO.

No, you will just get louder noise.
Car and radio manufacturers couldn`t crack this one with all of their resources, and the only solution they found was to stop making radios with LW on them.
