Well, had a new screen fitted just over a week ago by RAC windscreens.
Inspected it properly yesterday (I have not been using that car).
1) The rubber seals at both top corners of the screen no longer make contact with the metal work.
2) There is damage to the bottom NS of the screen as if its been dropped before fitting.
3) When you start the car the engine noise is obviously higher, drive the car (50+) and you get wind noise along the bottom edge!
So its a crap job!
Phoned customer services today and I am awaiting a call from the local branch (in Nottingham)
-
so overall not a very good job.
the interesting thing will be how they 'recover' the situation
-
The CDX screen when we bought the cars was an RAC windscreen!
Was appaling quality
Had a big white patch at the bottom, in the centre. Glass seemed poor quality.
It was going to have an accident..
It was that bad it didnt need to, one hot day, car sat on the drive untouched, screen went bang, and big crack appeared.
Never again!
-
Talking of screens, does anyone know how to remove and refit the plastic/rubber surround on the windscreen??? :-/
-
It just pulls out and then gets tapped back in with a hide hammer.
You have to be careful though so as not to damage the plastic trim which it clips into on the edge of the screen
Still heard nothing from RAC......they told me they would call straight away.

Let them have it, and insist on speaking to a manager not a monkey.

Is there a difference in these places these days?

If you talk to customer services, there is normally a half decent person on the other end of the phone.

Already done that..........there was just somebody who would not pass comment, played the political line and took the details.!

My experience with high profile companies that do shoddy work is that they handle complaints very well. I believe they aim to get away with doing half a job because 95% of customers don't know a good job from a bad one and therefore go away happy. The 5% who complain they can afford to treat very well to avoid getting a bad name.
My guess is that you'll get phoned by an area customer relations guy who will argree with everything you complain about, resolve the situation and promise to give the cowboys involved a b0110ck1ng, which he won't, of course.
Hope it gets sorted anyway. It's frustrating when you maintain your own car and the one or two things you entrust to others get botched. >:(

I had considered fitting my own screen (I have fitted bonded ones in the past and can get a loan of the kit) but, its cheaper to get it done on insurance.
-
the only complaint i`ve got bout my windscreen that was fitted over a week ago is there was no free coffee machine.... :'(

A very well put statement Kevin.

Well, when they offer to re-fit it, send the bloke off to the pub while you do the job properly using his kit. :y
Everyone's happy.

Yes its my one.......should have checked it before now but its not been a priority.
Still heard nothng!

Just checked it again...........not convinced the bottom edge is bonded at all as you can flex it from the inside!

Perhaps if you haven't heard back to them, it's time to tell them that you have safety concerns and are going to get the car inspected... [smiley=evil.gif]

Looks like you aren't the only one. I knew i'd seen something the other day when I was looking to see if there is anything available to polish out the scratches on my screen.
-
I just phoned them again......
Got put through to the local depot and have got to take my car to them on Wednesday morning to get it put right......and this time it better be right!
But, even then, the guy on the phone wasn't realy listening because he started to talk to somebody else mid conversation.
Not happy, NOT HAPPY AT ALL!

During the repair did you stay with them...
This summer changed mine by the opel service from a stone crack..
Require two man at minimum.. And the previous insulation material
must be cleaned very carefully and totally..Take many hours and car
stayed there one night ..No problems after..
ps: even if it was new model windscreen the quality of glass was not
same the original..Looking from sideways was visible the quality not
very good..

I did notice a few extra scratches but, how do you prove it!
And only one person, god knows how he lifted the screen in and out as they are dam heavy on an Omega!

1200 grid sandpaper with water (firsty try only in one corner to
estimate work required.Dont sand too much).. And use only on
damaged parts..
And long hours of polishing with machine using G3 after.. (machine is
must handwork nearly impossible)
Not easy..

cleaning of old insulator..And job must be done paralel with two persons absolutely..Even I helped them ..

Take a photo before the start of job...
-
Gonna take some pics this evening of the 'handy craft'.....
Might well pop the scuttle cover off so I can see the bottom edge seal.
I am still sat here swearing, useless good for nothing, low life, brain dead, shite brained, spineless, rip off, coniving, bodge merchant, lilly livered, useless excuses of a service provider.......well words to that affect!

The secret is giving some extra £ to the service people who will do the job..
So they be more carefull..
Thats what I do.. ;D

I wouldn't really say these are scratches in truth, more of a slight scoring by the wipers (I think the previous owner left them in automatic mode). I reckon it could be polished out.

Right
Took it in this morning to be re-done, there was 3 of us in the que to hand the keys over and 2 of use where there to get the job re-done!
Then I had to brave public transport to get to work (and will have to in order to pick the car up again).....
If they cock it up again there is gonna be big trouble!
-
I wonder how they'd get on with the Astra panoramic windscreen :-?

Should have told them you're getting their work checked out by the AA engineers ;D ;D ;D
-
yep..
-
their workshop caught fire, the omega is now a burnt out shell, they have ordered every single component needed to build a new omega from the local vx stealer, and their team of highly skilled craftsmen are going to assemble the new car overnight and deliver it to your door at 8a.m tomorrow..........am i close? ;D
-
Did you find they had the wipers on the inside of the screen? ;D ;D ;D
-
whilst in the workshop one of the RAC transits was started whilst in gear, it lurched forward smashing itself into the back of the omega, that inturn was pushed so far forward it caught the racking, pulled it all down on top of the car so ruining it.
the upshot is the are going to put you in a brand new car of your choice upto the value of 30k, however you must never utter a word of this and you must sing the praises of RAC autoglass for ever

On a slightly different note..........ive had both front windows replaced by RAC autoglass..........due to lowlifes.
Something i noticed a month or so ago........they've fitted ordinary glass to both sides.......should be thermal glass!!

Right.......took it in, spoke to the person on reception, re-iterated the faults and that they had said they would be fitting a new screen (this had also been told to the customer services department and the depot manager on the phone!)
So, went to get it and asked if they found the problem.
Yes sir, 4 inches of sealant missing along the bottom.....(must have been fitted by Steve Wonder!).
OK, so went and checked it and the rubbers still do not seal against the body work and its the same bloody screen with the damage on it!
Pointed this out and was told, ow, thats just a defect in the laminate.....so we re-fitted the screen
I pointed out that its was not, its damage, and that it would wick water up, freeze and fail again.......
So, they are doing it AGAIN next Wednesday but this time its at work and under my watchful eye!
The correct answer therefore was.....third time lucky!

this is a requirement..
but try to be patient if they make mistakes again..
-
If they make mistakes again I shall take the tools and do it myself!
-
will be better I think..But only when placing the window on fresh isolator, you will need another pair of hands..
and also when taking it out..

I suspect one of the main causes is that they are not taking the time to remove the old sealent. Its critical on complex screens (and the Omega is a pretty complex shape).
We used to work at getting it to a max of 1mm before applying the new bonding (used to cut a V in the end of the nozel to get the right shape bead) to about 1/2 an inch thickness.
Then give it 10 mins to go off slightly (depends on the bonding you are using) before fitting the screen.
We used to use clamps in the corners to hold them down whilst it went off for 20 minutes!

From the time I changed as far I can remember they work considerable amount of time when cleaning..What scared me was they use very sharp materials for cleaning near the paint..
And after when they placed the window they dont push with hands ..Only use slight taps with a plastic small hammer..
After they put bandage all around and let for a whole night..
I forgot to say they use vacuum holders when they are placing it..
the isolation material was black and used as a very thick layer..
-
Yes, vac holders for positioning and then clamps to hold it in whilst the bonding goes off.
The tool I have used for removing the sealent is a bit like a potato peeler so the blade never actualy makes contact with the paint....

good idea..any mistake means scratch in paint..
-
There disposable things, strong plastic about 15mm wide with a sharp blade and a thin plastic section under the blade......you just use it to peel the gunk off....
The worst bit is removing the trim and then pulling the cheese wire through the old sealent which cuts it so you can get the screen out!

And cutting is another trouble also..

One should always vote for ones own poll.....note that I waited until others had voted first so as not to give the game away... ;D
-
I didn't vote due to 'insider knowledge'
We must have seemed a right pair last night - you ranting about RAC Windscreens, and me with a mega monk on over the journey ;D
-
Right, in theory RAC windscreens are coming along to replace the screen and trims again tomorrow.
So, do you think I have heard anything...............correct, no, they are so bloody incompitent
-
Not just the windscreen arm....
Sent our RAC renewal off weeks ago (tesco clubcard deal)
Heard absolutely nothing.
Rang em last night, "ohh yes, all processed an renewed"
I says "wheres my confirmation"
They say "we never send confirmation out"
I reply "you have every year till now"
no answer to that!
What a way to run a business!
-

I suspect there will be an angry Mr DTM tomorrow. Give 'em some :y
-
If they mess it up again just leave it with me for a few days and Ill get it sorted. Do you want clear, frosted or leaded glass?
-
Well, I phoned them (again) this afernoon.
Told them the saga and the woman on the phone said, 'well we wouldn't be calling you until tomorrow anyway'
I then explained that I had been assured by the depot foreman that I would be called early this week to confirm that the parts were in and that the job would be done.
She then said 'well Omegas are very hard to fit screens to you know'
I asked if the fact that a dirty great length of sealent had been missed off, damage to the base of the screen and poorly fitted trim was the fault of the car.......and she put the bloody phone down.
So I called head office and put a formal complaint (followed up by email) in against her.
They are absolutely totaly and utterly rather useless!
-
The really depressing thing as you well know Mark, is that this is so common now. Companies that can't even get the bl**dy basics of customer service right! >:(
-
[ch304]f this is their behaviour to the customers,
I dont want to estimate how they work on the cars.. :(
-
Well, he arrived to the security hut and despite the instructions provided............has left again!
So hes coming back in a couple of hours!
F'ing useless....
-
i think the poll should be reset and re-run
-
Ok, finaly turned up and the job is now complete.......
.........I didnt get to inspect the job until after they had left.
So, whts the outcome this time.......vote away!
-
So, given that he scarpered... Doesn't bode well. :(
-
Where is the option for having autoglass fixing the problem and sending rac the bill?
I am sure there is a law that after incompetance, you MUST give them the opportunity to correct, if that fails then you can demand they pay someone else to fix it
-
I will reveal the outcome later....
-
Probably goofed it up again given how they legged it before you could inspect it!
-
I'm gonna say fixed, as I'm sure they really didn't want to fail again.... ....but then again, they obviously are rather useless :-/
-
i have zero faith that they could do the job right, they would have done it right the first time had they had that ability.
if they have naused it up again i wold be demanding that another windscreen company deal with it as you have no faith in their ability to fix the car to the manufacturers specifications.
I had an issue with insurance once, my car was hit and they wanted me to take the car to a place that had a bad reputation, in the small print it ddi say that i could take the car wherever i wanted (within reasonable quote of course) and it would be dealt with, can you not do the same with this?
-
Well did they or did'nt they ::)
-
Well, this time......
They did an acceptable job!
Although I now need a new OOF tax disc holder!

Although I now need a new OOF tax disc holder!
Have you taken it out in the rain ??? ... Thrown buckets of water at it ?? Been through a car wash ?? ....
Given past record I would not be so trusting so fast ... or can I sell you a raincoat and/or life jacket ?? :)
The job had an observer and I popped out three times to 'advise' them!
