Just did the paperclip test and all I got back was flashing 1-2
After this test my digital display (clock/computer) flashes as does 3 lights on my car stereo (kenwood) which won't turn on.
I have to remove the faceplate from the stereo to stop the digital display flashing.
Any ideas or is the stereo toast ?

did you use the correct pins, and never bridge any others?
The 12 is the start of codes message, so if thats all you had then you have no codes stored.
never seen the issue you are describing.
how is the MID flashing? and has this stopped when the stereo face was removed?
I would be pressing reset on the stereo if it has a reset button, or disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes if not

Was the correct pins and didn't bridge any others.
Tried disconnecting stereo from power and the reset button. I'll try the battery in a bit. If that fails i'll try and old JVC I have.
-
umm its screwed my stereo - an old one I have seems ok :(
-
Don`t see how it can possibly screw your stereo?
What model is it, and exactly what is happening?
Which lights are flashing?
:-?
-
Kenwood 3024 - nothing special but did me.
Its def the stereo and with the stereo in the MIG flashes like an indicator lamp as does 2 lights on the stereo which doesn't work.
Stuck an old JVC in and everything is ok again :(
Thinking about it I haven't checked the rest of the cars electrics but I imagine they are ok.
Its the SRC and Q/AUD buttons that are flashing.

I'd be suspicious of the stero wiring / earths and pos'tivs all good - as the paperclip test if done correctly cannot interfere with the stereo (as proved - your stereo still works - albeit another one)
-
reported no errors so Ill leave worrying about it until next time - in which case ill remove the stereo 1st :)
Just a wounder my stereo is dead as I hate the crap JBC thing but am not about to spend out until my fuel consumption problem is sorted.
-
Something does not sound right here - I too would be suspicious of the wiring as there is nothing you could have done with a paperclip test to have caused the stereo to do that if wired in correctly.

I'm wondering if the head unit is on the same diag. line as the engine ECU? Can't remember, but if the head unit still has this pin connected (it shouldn't!) you might have grounded a pin on the head unit and maybe.... this has caused the problem.
Does the head unit have an ISO adaptor behind it between the car loom and the head unit - or has the connector on the car loom been bodged to plug straight into the head unit?

There is nothing you can do to the head unit that would cause it to fail in this manner - Irrespective of what wires have been shorted or used, it would not cause the head unit to start flickering a few LED`s in this manner.
I suspect that something else in the vehicle electrics has failed and as a result of this, the head unit is not seeing a good or suffiecient supply or earth, and as soon as it tries to power up, the power supply to it fails and it shuts down again, only to repeat the cycle.
This would indicate that either the head unit has taken power or earth from somewhere it shouldn`t have, or that there is a fault with a supply to it. It could be a faulty head unit, but I really doubt it.
The JVC head units do not require as much current when starting up as the Kenwoods do, so I think that this may be confusing the fault diagnosis. If the Kenwood could be powered up on a bench or tried in another vehicle, this would add a little weight to my own theory.

You could be right as the new head unit keeps cutting out and when it does the MIG goes blank.
My keyfob also now takes many trys to lock the car (even when sat inside right next to the rxer with new batterys) yet seems to unlock it on 1st go.
In past experience hard to find electrical faults = expensive :(
-
ive also just discovered as soon as I put the internal light on the stereo dies/mig blanks
-
Am I correct in thinking that the stereo has been "hardwired in" rather than using the normal ISO block connectors?
:-?
-
Had the standard 3 block connector which the stereo plugs into. No cut and badge wires. Waiting on a emergency light relay as that's buzzing when the emergency lights are on and they send lots crazy
-
Where are you located?
Somebody nearby may be able to glance a your electrics for you.
-
something is amiss, way beyond the stereo by the sounds.. !
-
Banbury, oxfordshire.
You don't think it might be the relay then?
-
Before doing anything else I would check that all the fuses are seated properly in the fusebox.
The OBD test socket is in the middle of the fusebox and maybe one of the fuses has fractured and decided to start playing up now after being disturbed slightly :-/
-
Paperclip test aint no good boy
:-/

ok I tried a new relay and no buzzing but dead so reading about the fuse suggestion I set about removing and testing every single fuse once again (it was one of the first things I tried).
I found a 20 amp dead fuse and low and behold everything seems back to normal. I must have missed the only dodgy fuse the 1st time round doh! I haven't tried the stereo yet as I'm at work but fingers crossed all will be ok.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions in this thread as I was close to giving up..
To say I'm happy is an understatement as I was thinking id wrecked the ecu.
Now to crack on with the rest of the problems my omega has, you lot will be sick of me soon :)
Thanks again...
