Title: Power Sounder
Post by: coop1952 on 29 September 2010, 09:07:02
The power sounder on my 2002 V6 is beeping and I have been told I need to either change it or change the batteries. The cost of a new item from Vx is £65 but changing the batteries is considerably cheaper. On looking at the various messages about this subject, it seems there are 2 types of replacements. There is the flat watch/key fob type of battery  and there is also the Varta soldered in batteries. Does anyone know which batteries my power sounder would take. Also, is there a sequence thta I haveto take when removing the power sounder?

Hi
The only certain way to know what batteries are fitted to your power sounder is to take it off, open it up, and see.  Its possible somebody has been there before you and fitted non-standard batteries.

Agree with what Alan said ^^

As for the sequence, the official way:

Loosen the car battery terminal ready for quick disconnection
Turn the ignition on then off again
Disconnect the car battery within fifteen seconds to avoid setting the alarm off
Do the job as described in the removal guide (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1220198611) and the fix it guide (http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1240077701)
Reconnect the car battery.

OR the sequence I used successfully that avoids the hassle (and the safety) of disconnecting the battery:
Do the job as described in the guide but pause before disconnecting the power sounder electrical connector
Turn the ignition on
Disconnect the power sounder – it won’t go off while the ignition is on
Turn the ignition off
etc

Tape the connector up if you want to use the car while you work on the power sounder and find batteries.  Try not to have the car nicked while the alarm is being repaired – your insurers won’t be amused.

If you have the green four-legged batteries like I did, they are available (link in another thread somewhere) but the three-legged variant that is widely available (Maplins and various web traders for example) also fits just fine.

My unit gave one short but loud beep as it was reconnected – nice to know my soldering hadn’t killed it.   ;)
