I'd like to fit a sub in my 97 estate, so what I'd like to know is does anyone know if anyone makes a sub like the Bose one is in the first aid compartment on later cars and if so would my original head unit be any good for this.

The Bose Estate box has a dual coil single sub speaker in it so only really any good with the Bose amp.
You could take off the rear side panel in the back and make up a wooden baffle to mount a sub, or use two small sub woofers in the Tailgate itself again by making a wooden baffle, either case the baffle would need to air tight when fixed for best results.

Cheers Chris if I was to make a box to fit in the space can you buy a sub thin enough to fit in it :question

You wouldn't need to make a box, if the baffle is fairly air tight then you would use the volume of the side panel or Tailgate.
