Title: Fault Codes
Post by: Sir Popple on 27 November 2010, 11:30:34
Hi, i hope someone can help, i have changed the oil inter-cooler, rocker cover gaskets and thermostat on my MV6 2000yr, and now the car will not start. I have checked around to make sure all is connected as it should be to find that the fuel pump is not running up. Having done the paper clip test i get the following fault codes 21, 48, 57, 49, 31, 73, 94. do i now have a faulty crank sensor? or is it something else?

21   Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Voltage High
48   Battery Voltage Low
57   Idle Air Control Voltage Low
49   Battery Voltage High
31   No Engine RPM Signal (IGNORE THIS ONE)
73   Mass Air Flow Sensor Voltage Low
94   Hall Sensor Voltage High

Double check all the plugs are in fully and in the right holes.

Well all plugs seem to be in the correct place and pushed together...

I wish to eliminate the fuel pump by checking for a feed there are 4 wires going to the plug in the boot, 2 Brown 1 Red Blue and 1 Blue Black and ideas which are the fuel pump feed wires?

Thanks

As you look down the wires towards the plug it's the left 2. The right 2 are for the fuel gauge.

Before you do that attach a jump lead from a solid metal point on the engine and the other to the -ve on the battery and try it. It seems to me that it's not grounding properly.

IIRC the fuel pump +ve is red/blue.

You won't. The fuel pump is only live when a) the engine is cranking and b) the crank sensor detects that the engine is turning.

Have you tried the jump lead?

Should be 12v or there abouts. Check the fuel pump relay.

It does just pull out, but they often stick.  I'd get a replacement from scrappy, then it matters little the damage you do ;)

It just pulls straight out but can be difficult, try getting a flat blade screwdriver under it and wiggle it upwards.

Here we go again.. The relay works fine on a regulated power supply on checking the feed to the relay on the car i am only getting 0.33 volts when cranking the engine. Any ideas anyone?

Please read the post before this, i have tried holding the Fuel relay in manually which does run the fuel pump, and then had the bright idea of holding the fuel pump relay in manually while cranking the engine to see if it would start but it didn't, ??????

Crank Sensor?

I know they are troublesome on the Omega, but I had the same problem on a Beetle with burning out a fuel pump relay due to a knackered crank sensor - spent hours on that bloody relay only to find it was something else.

I think Dave has probably identified the most likely cause.

The lead to the crank sensor degrades due to the heat from the exhaust manifold and disturbing it (by wrestling with the cam covers) can be the final straw.

Not all failed crank sensors bring up a code. When mine failed it didn't.

What I did notice was that with the failed sensor in place (and the engine failing to start) the engine management light stayed lit while the engine was cranking. With the new sensor fitted the light extinguished the moment the starter engaged and started cranking the engine.

As already said the ECU doesn't run the fuel pump unless it can sense the engine is turning.
