Hello Andy welcome to the forum.

Your problem sounds familiar, many people have had it. It could be something as simple as the connections on the dash need putting back in properly, but unfortunately it sounds like your ABS ECU is on the way out.

To help diagnose it, does your speed sensitive power steering become heavier (not always when this fault is present)? Does cruise control work, trip computer etc? The reason I ask is that the speed signal goes through ABS ECU, and if it is on the way out (intermittent fault that gradually gets worse until total failure), then anything that needs a speed signal will not work aswell.

Try cleaning the ABS sensors on the rear wheels, this MIGHT solve the problem.

If it is your ABS ECU, I have heard Vx charge more than it's worth to fix it. You can either get a second hand one (needs to be off the same year/engine size/gearbox, or have yours refurbished, cost of refurb IRO £130 from BBA Reman or ECUtesting.com or other reputable company.

It is a bit of a pain to get the ABS ECU off, here are some links that might help you. (from the maintenance section)

Rev counter not linked to ABS at all .. and the lights are behaving so IMHO it's not the ABS at all.

Try pressing firmly, quite hard but without any sudden impact, on the centre of the instrument panel. The speedo and RPM gauges don't have electrical "plugs" on them but contacts that slide between fingers .. if that makes any sense..... its possible the panel is slightly loose and has moved sufficiently to break the contact .. so a firm push may well reseat them.

If not it a matter of panel out and see wahats happening behind it .. :(

power steering is fine i have heard about the abs ecu faults but unlike others the abs/tc lights are coming on and  off as they should dont have cruise control but the trip computer is also reading everything fine as my first thought was speed sensor but it still shows an average speed on computer after i reset it :-/

The reason I ask is that I have a spare dash unit from a 98 2.5 auto which you are happy to borrow for the cost of the postage - it might help narrow the fault down a bit?

Shows less than 140k also!  :y
