Title: Oh Ar$e! - Urgent question!
Post by: Lazydocker on 25 January 2011, 18:48:59
Right, changing the HID bulbs (well, all 8 in the units actually) and have the dreaded broken adjusters. Not the levelling ones though, the side to side adjusters. One quite bad, the other not so bad so... Do I pull the lenses off (think they just need heating and peeling away gently?) to gain access and try and glue a couple of nuts in place or stick them back in and source a pair of replacements?

Wouldn't mind but MOT is due in March and I made one of them worse when removing the bulb :-[ :-[

Any thoughts?

I thought they were for up & down adjustment :-?

It'll be the larger adjuster thats broken and that is what the alum. ones replace. Split the headlight to double check though.

left and right.

proper job is the ali adjusters. if you dont want to mess about with the lens just fit a long allen headed bolt ground down slightly and a riv nut.(aka a bodge)

TBH my lenses are past their best, even after I've sanded and polished them. El Pinko is checking to see if he has a pair of lamps in better condition than mine  :y

In the mean time I have fitted the replacement bulbs and glued the adjusters back together, leaving them to harden overnight. Doubt it will work but have to re-fit them tomorrow morning so I can use the car! Then, when I source a decent set I may well fit the ally adjusters before dropping them in :y

Update! Need the car back on the road by lunchtime so fitted all the new bulbs and could just get to the adjusters to get some glu on them. So that's what I've done, although only a temporary bodge repair, and it seems to have held :y

Not sure how long for but it'll do for now! All fitted and working  :y

Are you saying you managed to get glue on them without removing lenses? You may well have done a good job.  :y

Because of the adjusters that were broken I could get to them through the main beam aperture in the rear of the unit ;) Fiddly and, I expect, only a very temporary repair but they seem to have held so far ::)

Well... Thus far the adjusters are holding :o :y

Must admit, I'm slightly disappointed with the 5000K bulbs but think it may well be down to dirty lights. The uprated main beam bulbs though, although still a yellow light, have transformed the night time experience on the country roads around me :y :y

Are you using a "Branded" bulb or an internet cheapie?

Must admit, it's a cheaper one from HIDS4U but, like I say, I think I'm being fussy! They're good, just not as good as I'd hoped for

Wasn't being fussy... Was being stupid! :-[ :-[

Was comparing the updated main beam to the dipped beam in my mind, not allowing for the fact that the main beam is much brighter ::) ::)

A few more night time trips I can see an improvement :y

For some strange reason the headlamp washers aren't firing now though :-/ Although I must confess... I haven't investigated yet
