Title: Outside temp
Post by: tango on 09 December 2010, 16:42:48
Hi
My car is not showing the temp outside
It's got F showing on the display
I thought it must be the sensor on the front bumper so I changed that but still the same
Any ideas what it can be

Check & trace wiring back to big black connector under N/S of bumper

Checked the connector
It's a 4 pin plug the one that connects to the fogs too
Seems to be fine
Any other suggestions

Try unpluging the 4 pin connector a few times and give it a squirt of contact cleaner or WD40, may be a little damp/corrosion got in there. Try the same with the temp sensor as well.

There's a lot of salt out there at the moment and it gets everywhere, salt attracts the damp as well   :y

No need to do that . . .

The car is already telling you its "F"-ing cold !!

and the ice on the windows/ snow on the ground might tell you to ;D

sure that it is a working temp sensor you changed it with  :P

If the sensor is OK (very hard to test it) the it's either a broken wire or damp/corrosion in the 4 pin bumper loom plug. I've got a couple of temp sensors here if you want to try a 3rd :y

As long as it's not showing FFS it can't be too bad! ;D ;)

Mine is showing inaccurate readings, several degrees out... Any ideas?

the sensor.. change it and you will get as acurate readings as it can get :)

Changed the sensor to a new one and still giving the F. My plug is only 2-pin plug (the one to which the sensor plugs).

Any ideas?

Does it affect the heater? Seems to blow hot all the time...

As stated above... Check the wiring ;)

I have the same problem! And yes, if you have climate control it does have an effect ::)

The wiring is ok visually checked, will have to measure it to be sure. There should be constant power coming to one wire? Where is the next plug? Inside the front wing?

havent you got front fogs ?? because the connector for fogs and temp sensor is up under passenger side front bumper, big black 4pin  :y

Yes, I have fogs. I was only speaking about the temp sensor connector at the end of the sensor, only two pins. Have not yet located the next plug "upstream", the wires to sensor come from a well-taped loom from the left hand fog light area...

as i said there will be a big 4pin connector up under the passenger side bumper (front) mine was just dangling there and somebody had just tried to pull it apart and pulled the pins out of the connector, so if you look up under the bumper going up towards the headlight you should see it  :y

will check that, thanks for advice  :y

Solved.  ;D

Someone had "repaired" one of the fog light wires, had put an "Abiko" style crimped connector to the wire and left it as is... Well, it had rubbed against the other wires and the blue-white wire to the temp sender was nearly cut off. Also the other black wire for fogs was in very bad shape.

Now all soldered together and sealed well enough for next decades  ::)

Hi,

I have twice repaired the 4 pin connector and other wiring on my external temp sensor (V reg 2.0 CDX estate, X20XEV) but it has now failed again, showing "F" on the dash. I have replaced the sensor - twice. I have scraped many knuckles trying to trace the wiring up under the battery tray but I reckon they must have welded the panels around the loom!

Anyway, I have been getting conflicting stories from people, including the "professionals", about whether this sensor affects the climate control and also about where the wires go. Some say straight to the dash and some say to the ECU.

Does anyone have a definitive answer please, preferrably with a wiring diagram for this late model?

Regards.

Hi,

At last I have a definitive solution, and you're right - it does affect the climate control.

I just found someone with the right wiring diagram who managed to bypass the broken wire from the multiway connector under the dash on the passenger side. The climate control actually puts out an "external sensor failure" code. So, climate control now behaving itself.

Regards.
