Title: My stereo won't play (fair)

After a total loss of volts I am unable to put the code back into my head unit. However much I press the AS button it will not bring up the digits so I can put in the code.
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

Ign ON, radio OFF   <<< VITAL!!
Press and hold AS, turn radio ON, release AS after bleep

then follow instructions....
