Title: DaveDNDs' opinion needed
Post by: mathewst on 29 March 2011, 09:55:00
Dave, a small advice is needed.
I currently have a Blaupunkt Rome NAV55E head unit, and have a chance to trade it and some cash for an Kenwood dx7100 double din unit.
Have no experience with these so anything to look out for.
Guess these should be fairly good units but cannot find much info on the net either.
Any advice is more than welcome.
Thanks in advance.
Also any other guys who have experience with these keenwod units or something similar are welcomed for any advice they can provide

Kenwood sets are fairly reliable these days with the exception of the ribbon cable circuits they use for fold down panels, the composistion is just too soft for heavy useage and can lead to expensive and repetative repair bills - I think this unit will be the same after around 12 months use, and the only other real issue is that Kenwood controls are often too small for anyone with man sized fingers. Be carefull also as there are a number of Non-UK sets floating around with non-uk tuners in them, and they shoud be avoided at all costs.

I have to sit on the fence on this one, I like the unit very much, it functions very well, but would personally not buy it due to the imminant ribbon failure that plagues all Kenwoods

Out of curiosity, which countries do you get your stuff from over there? are tehre any "dominant " supply countries?

and what are your radio frequencies on FM ?

Are you the same as UK / Japan / USA ?

may be able to suggest some others, as some of the stuff not available to the UK may be easier for you to source - just need to know what you are compatable with.

Radio frequencies are standard eu 87-108 FM with 0,05 interval.
Dominant supply is probably from Germany, or China Japan or Taiwan directly

In that case, also look at some of the Addzest and Carrozzeria head units  - but make sure that you get one with a tuner that can be configured from Japan to Europe to work in your country

Those two brands are often de-featured and then rebranded as Clarion or Pioneer and because they only ever arrive here from Japan, the tuners are useless - but if you have contacts elsewhere, you may be able to locate the better spec versions
