Title: What is a Bose system?
Post by: GrahamK on 04 April 2011, 12:14:43
I used to think the Bose systems in Facelift Elites consisted of Bose speakers, loom and amp along with a Bose fettled head unit. usually a 2013/15 with Sat Nav/Sat Nav & Phone
Recently I've seen cars for sale advertised with Bose and from the pics I can see the head unit is the 2006.
Is this correct?
Will someone please clarify what constitutes a Bose System.
Regards,
Graham.

2006 can also be fitted and bose enabled (mine has one) :y

As above - Bose with satnav gave a NCDCxx system
Bose just for audio - CCR2006 (in bose mode)
note, ALL 2006's that can do bose, can be reconfigured to non bose mode.
SOME normal 2006s can be reconfigured to work as bose.  It seems to be pot luck if yours is reconfigurable or not..

Correct :y

'Pot luck' is correct, though if you find one that is Bose enablable, you're quite lucky.

Yours is an elite, so obviously it came with a Bose enabled 2006 (assuming not an NCDx series) :y

Thanks for the replies so far.
How can I find out if my headunit is reconfigurable?
(I do realise I will need the rest of the Bose stuff as well)

Thanks,

Graham.

Trial and error as far as I know, find someone with a tech2, ask them to try and swap it (then swap it back till you get your bose stuff)

Would it not be easier to search the breakers for a 2006 unit with all the Bose what-nots in an Elite? :-/ :-/

Unfortunately there must be quite a few floating around at the breakers :'( :'(

Yeah Lizzie, probably. I imagine a set of headunit, amp speakers and loom might go for a few bob though. Happens to be a set minus headunit available at the mo and if I can reconfigure my headunit it may be a cost effective way to upgrade the sounds in my car!

Whilst is was a worthwhile upgrade in its day - that day was 20 years ago, and sound has moved on - by replacing the speakers with aftermarket ones would give a far superior sound without the need to rewire and reprogram anything

If you have a way of reading it, it can be determined by its ident.

Due to the fragile nature of ccr2006, not many are originals. There are a fair few Elites out there with a non-bose ccr2006 driving a bose amp

After Dave's comments, I am beginning to wonder if it's worth the effort.
Can any on here who have gone from a standard unit to another car with Bose confirm whether they noticed much of a difference?

Graham.

Thats an unfair comparison - there is no doubt at all that a BOSE system will sound infinately better than a standard system.

My argument against BOSE is nothing to do with the sound it gives, it was the best of its time with the technology that was available 20 years ago.

Things have moved on, and what was good 20 years ago, is now very uninspiring by modern standards, and my argument is that given the not inconsiderable amount of work involved in retro fitting BOSE, you are still going to be left with very old technology.

If you want to compare two cars, and that is an excellent idea, then compare one with BOSE to one with a good set of aftermarket speakers, and then make your descision.

The standard bose setup in Omegas is undoubtedly better than the standard non-bose setup in Omegas as DaveDND points out.  The external amp, the subs, better quality door speakers all help to increase the quality.

Not sure just changing speakers alone would bring a standard Omega non bose system up to bose quality - Dave DND is the expert, so I'd bow to his expertise, but I am sceptical.

Certainly an aftermarket HU with decent speakers, possibly a small amp will outperform the Omega bose system

Modern speakers can indeed give a real depth of sound that the BOSE system is so famous for -

I fully understand the scepticism, and its  shame you are not closer to me, for I could demonstrate very easily what can be achieved for very little money in one of my own cars.

No disagreement about that, but I thought the idea was to retain the original head unit?

A good set of speakers, not a set of cheapies will dramatically enhance the sound, and if the budget will allow for a small amp, then this can easily be run off the OEM head unit to literally shake the car if desired.

The only limit is your imagination - not budget !!
