Title: NCDC2013 issues (Sat Nav)
Post by: zirk on 31 July 2011, 13:15:41
First off, being an MV6 chappy, these toys are all new to me, so please dont shout at me if Im asking stupid questions.

So, Sat Nav (GID type) not working, first thoughts was the Navtec disc that came with it as looks as though its seen better days, it lets me load an address (is that info from the disk, or from the HU memory?), and calculates a route and says the route is in the direction or something, followed about 10 seconds later by cannot calculate route, every attempt after that comes up straight away with cannot calculate route, untill a switch off, wait one, back on, then goes through the whole process again.

Tried another Members Disk (known working), loads etc and comes up same, no calculation, but His Disk is for a CID version, not sure if there the same.

So starting to think shot laser?, although it will play CD in the Nav slot fine, are they CD or DVD readers?.

Yesterday on a run, decided to have another play and  got it to work! (Hot Day?), Hunky Dorey, the Nav went very quiet, dispite me doing lots of roundabouts and things before the Nav telling me to do u turns and turn right into rivers and stuff. Checked the Info and The Nav thinks Im in Didcot, even though Im driving in Epping Forest  about 60 miles away!.

So now thinking is this because of an Laser issue, Disk, or am I losing GPS signal, the Navs lost the plot, literary, and the Giro thingy's are working overtime.

Thoughts please.

CID makes no difference to the sat nav disc.

Don't see how it can be a laser issue if it plays CDs ok.

I'm sure putting the system in diag mode will confirm that your GPS aerial is working or not.

I still think its either a GPS signal issue, or possibly something wierd going on with the speed sensor...  :-/

Thanks for the reply James, and thanks for the manuals, when I saw you last the Nav was not working at all, from yesterday its kicked in but is about 60 miles out, took it out tonight, thinks its in Adermaston where ever that is, maybe thats where it was born and its home sick!

Did a search on here about putting it in Diag mode, no joy, any pointers.

Press and hold MAIN for 7secs, then release. Then press NAV Press either MAIN or NAV (not sure which) a few times and it will flick through the 3 pages of diagnostic info.

Or you can hold CLEAR button in for a reset

Sounds just like mine - is 'GPS' shown in reversed letters (black on white)? That's what mine shows and means (I believe) it can't find any satellites - confirmed on mine in diag mode where it shows a lock on 0/0 sats.

It tries to navigate based on it's last known position and the compass & speed that still work.. so it ends up thinking it's in the middle of a field most of the time.

If the GPS on top right is inverted, not enough sats.

That's what I assume mine is - when I stuff the wires from a Maplin-special GPS sensor in the back of the HU it picks up satellites OK, so the problem is somewhere farther down the line..

Expensive fix if it's the aerial, though, as they're rare as the proverbial. I just stick to slapping a TomTom on my screen and smiling at how much that would piss TB off ;) ;D

Ok, thanks all, just had another play, seems I have 2 issues, 1. the disk or laser doesn't like it when its cold, but soon warms up, 2. the GPS signal appears fine when stationary (got it test mode, but couldn't get to Nav test page), hower when moving, over a few bump etc the GPS starts to lose GPS, (Highlighted GPS), stop the Car wait one and its back.

So further investigating required, probably intermittant coax run somewhere, or worse case furbed Gps Aerial.

thanks Chris.  :y
