Title: Built-in phone again.
Post by: jereboam on 04 August 2011, 17:29:25
OK, I read the last correspondence on this topic, and I realise now that I am wasting my time trying to get the new T-Mobile sim I bought (and just topped up with £10) to go.

What I want to know is why it still says "No Network" when I put the old O2 sim back in.  I appreciate that it may not work any more, 'cos I didn't use it for a long time and, it being PAYG, they stole my credit and cut me off, but I'm surprised it doesn't even see the network.

Anyone wanna buy a T-Mobile sim?

If there's no credit then it may not see the network... Quite common

Aha! Does that mean that they've just stolen my credit, but left me with a card that will function again if I put some credit on it?  I sort of assumed that the sim had become de-activated.

This may just be a fleeting guest appearance - I'm thinking about returning, but having trouble making up what remains of my mind :)

Errrm... Pass, you'd have to check ;)

TBH, unless you desperately want to keep that number (which may have been re-issued already) I'd just get a free sim and start again. Tesco, Gif-Gaff, Vodaphone and O2 are the 4 that jump out off the top of my head but you need an operator on the 900 band :y

Since I stopped car pooling 3 years ago, nobody has called the car phone.  I have absolutely no idea what the number is, and I'm no longer in contact with the car poolers.  I'm sure that I had the number in my mobile, but that would have been 3 handsets ago, and it doesn't appear to have made it onto the sim.

No, I'm not worried about the number, I was just hoping the credit might still be floating about in cell-phone-space.  ::)

I think there is something in the "small print" that unused credit vanishes after a period of time if the SIM isn't used.

with PAY credit does expire if its not been used or registered on the network after a set time, which can be as low as 30 days. If that happens the number is recycled and the SIM becomes inactive.

Networks have become more aggressive at this, as there is only a set amount of numbers available, so they are deactivating 'dead' ones quicker.

07??? ??? ???   I make that 999,999,999 (or basically 1 billion) available mobile numbers available in the uk. With approx. 50 million people that could be using mobile phones, that's an average of 20 numbers each. You can certainly see the available numbers running out fairly quickly at that rate!!  :o

They are running out, think of all the USB dongles out there with a SIM in,  iPads, Android Tablets, Blackberry Playbooks, Laptops, any hand held device that has a 3G data connection often has a SIM. It may not be ringable, or make calls, but it has a number registered on it.

My old job, we had servers full of SIMs for various tasks.... your thinking too narrowly just thinking one person, one phone, one sim. ;)

Fortunately I managed to get a sim that doesn't expire (unless unused for 6 months iirc) :y

O2 will disconnect the Sim 12 months after activation or six months after the last dialed number wiether its got Credit on it or not, Sim will show No Network or Invalid Sim after this point.

The Credit is still on the system, a quick chat with O2 from another handset give them the Mobile or Sim Number and they should reactivate the Sim and your Credit, I did one for someone recently who had £8.79 or something left and they where kind enough (when asked) to top it up to £10 so they could buy some Add Ons.

Chris.

Happy ending - your advice was spot on - they will re-connect my number and restore the £19.50 credit that was there.  In future, I must make at least one chargeable call every six months.

Just in time for my holiday :)
