Title: flat battery woes
Post by: Y26SE on 16 August 2011, 14:12:02
Right came out to my desmond this morning after not running it for a few days since i had a flat battery and i replaced it with a new one and it almost didnt start and my battery green dot is gone so i stuck my amp meter inline and im pulling 0.25 amps constant withevrything off and pulling each fuse in turn i found the draw was circuit 7 courtesy lamp yet nothing was active at the time as i pulled the earth switch from the a piller to stop the lights activating. when iput the fuse back you can here a relay chatter and the main light comes on pulling nearly an amp and then on time out as normal back to the .25 amp. wiith this circuit pulled i get 0.04 amps with the alarm set it sits at 0.3 amps so something is sucking 1/4 amp and is killing my battery.  any ideas anyone :-/

ive pulled out the main front light, all four door lights, rear handle lights, boot light and i still have the draw and if fuse is pulled my draw goes away are their any more lights i dont now about as ive tried pulling all the relays in the car and none affect the draw but does the lamps system have a relay else where as i can here switching go on for the main light but it seems to be from behind the dash the draw is not enough to be a light as each one i pulled inturn pulled 1/2 amp each so what on earth is going on. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

There is indeed a delay relay on later facelifts.

Connect up the ammeter, close the doors and wait 5-10 minutes, monitoring the current drain. You should see well under 100 milliamps.

right ive taken each earth switch and wd 40 applied, all lights removed and doors closed as suggested and with the circuit 7 fuse replaced indeed after about 5 mins i have a draw down to 400 milliamps. do i have a gremlin in here drinking my current at night when im not looking  :)

right, im floating now between 260-440 milliamps after 5 mins and this stays constant for 30 mins plus that i monitored for. Is the 300 milliamp area ok or as stated it should be down near the 100 milliamp area?

and did i just have a sticky switch somewhere?

radio mem use's battery as well,, display on dash aswell, and some times if there is a fault with the radio the arial amp use's the battery aswell if it is on back window heater.

When you remove your key from the ignition does the centre of the ignition pop out with a reassuring clunk?

Try disconnecting the powersounder under the front scuttle

If it's definitely been narrowed down to fuse 7.. This feeds the consumer delay relay, and that's probably what you can hear chattering. This is supposed to power everything down after 5-10 minutes (so if that's working a faulty interior light switch would not result in a constant drain) but maybe it has died.

It's up above the driver's pedals if you remove the trim panel above the footwell. On a 2.2 there'll be a group of 2 relays in a holder.
