Title: oil changes by syphon not sump plug?
Post by: Varche on 25 February 2008, 12:09:46
Due to a number of encounters with rocks etc my sump plug is stuck in. Rather than take it out and strip the threads and be transportless till I got it helicoiled or a new sump pan, I get oil and filter changes done at a local garage where the guy syphons the hot oil out by machine.

I presume that this doesn't get all the oil out but if done regularly can't be that bad, can it?.

Anyone else use this method?

It's not nice, but often used on boats.

i do that with bottles of lager, usually through a straw,

disadvantage = lightheaded and poor balancing
advantage= job satisfaction

Machine Mart do a range of suction oil extractors.

Prob easier for a garage, no chance of a stripped thread, less messy

There are 2 designs of v6 sump iirc - one is easy to change, so that would be best solution to be honest...

I've attempted this before.  I got a pump (fairly cheap from eBay - similar to the Multi-Purpose Syphon and Pump Kit 8p from the link somewhere above) and spent a long time trying to get the oil out.  It's messy, the seals on the pump failed, the transfer rate was rubbish and I got pretty sick of the process quite quickly.
Ok - the pump was crap, but I'm not convinced for a moment that all the oil came out.  Nowhere near as much would come out compared to taking the plug out.

I'd try and fix the sump plug - particularly if you can change the sump without having to take the engine out.  I've got a 2.5TD which (as far as I know) required the engine out to change the sump.

It still makes me wonder what someone was thinking when making a sump softer than the bolt that goes into it.  It's got to be just money grabbing for the dealers.  I'd be happy to pay an extra quid or two for a new plug with each filter if it meant that it wouldn't strip the thread on the sump.

Anyone ever helicoiled their sump before?  How difficult's that?

Welcome to BMW design >:(

Marks_DTM helicoiled mine and fitted a quick drain plug.  Unfortunately I bottomed out the car at about 80mph, ripping the sump plug out.  Still, the helicoil survived, so I just put in a normal plug.
