Title: Remember when....
Post by: HerefordElite on 02 March 2008, 23:30:23

Just for a minute, forget everything stressful and read
this...............

Close your eyes and go back in time...
Before the Internet...
Before semi-automatics, joyriders and crack....
Before Playstations, x-box or Super Nintendo...

Way back......

I'm talking about Hide and Seek in the park.
The corner shop.
Hopscotch.
Butterscotch.
Skipping.
Handstands.
Football with an old can.
Fingerbobs.
Beano, Dandy, Buster, Twinkle and Dennis the menace.
Roly Poly.
Hula Hoops, jumping the stream, building dams.
The smell of the sun and fresh cut grass.
Bazooka Joe bubble gum.
An ice cream cone on a warm summer night from the van that plays a tune
Chocolate or vanilla or strawberry or maybe Neapolitan or perhaps a screwball.

Wait......

Watching Saturday morning cartoons, short commercials or the flicks.
Children's Film Foundation, The Double Deckers, Red Hand Gang, The Tomorrow People, Tiswas or Swapshop?, and 'Why Don't You'? - or staying up for Doctor Who.
When around the corner seemed far away and going into town seemed like going somewhere.
Earwigs, wasps, stinging nettles and bee stings.
White dog sh*t.
Sticky fingers.
Playing Marbles. Ball bearings. Big 'uns and Little 'uns.
Cops and Robbers, Cowboys and Indians, and Zorro.
Climbing trees.
Building igloos out of snow banks.
Walking to school, no matter what the weather.
Running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt.
Jumping on the bed. Pillow fights.
Spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was cause for giggles.
Being tired from playing....remember that?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team.
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon.
Football cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle.
Choppers and Grifters.
Twist grip 3 speed gears
Everyone had Police sirens on their bikes.
Small narrow skateboards and adjustable rollerskates
Eating raw jelly. Orange squash ice pops.

Remember when...

There were two types of trainers - girls and boys, and Dunlop Green Flash and the only time you wore them at school was for P.E.
You knew everyone in your street - and so did your parents.
It wasn't odd to have two or three "best" friends.
You didn't sleep a wink on Christmas eve.
When nobody owned a pure-bred dog.
When 25p was decent pocket money
Curly Wurlys. Space Dust. Toffo's.
Top Trumps.
When you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.
When nearly everyone's mum was at home when the kids got there..
When any parent could discipline any kid, or feed him or use him to carry groceries and nobody, not even the kid, thought a thing of it.
When being sent to the head's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.
Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs etc.
Parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! (and some of us are still afraid of them.) Didn't that feel good?

Just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!
Remember when....

Decisions were made by going " eanie meanie minie mo "
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest.
Money issues were handled by whoever was the banker in "Monopoly".
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was germs.
And the worst thing in your day was having to sit next to one.
t was unbelievable that 'British Bulldog 123' wasn't an Olympic event.
Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a catapult.
Nobody was prettier than Mum.
Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better.
Taking drugs meant orange-flavoured chewable aspirin.
Ice cream was considered a basic food group.
Getting a foot of snow was a dream come true.
Older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED.

Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from their "grown up" life...

I DOUBLE-DARE YOU

Oh yes. Oggy raiding, scrumping (nicking apples) Kids have done this for ever, my dad had this thing, you got a whack, not for what you were doing but for getting caught! (and I stress mischief type things only)
Reminds me of a story, 8 years old, in the local shop, in came a girl my age, I welcomed her with ‘hello smelly’ got into trouble off the shop keeper, who told my Mum who told my Dad, got into trouble again. Shop keeper was husband to school teacher yep, got into trouble again. I will always remember though the teacher saying  “****** has had a bath so she does not smell anymore” I kid you not.

When it was cold enough on the way home from the shop that (if you were quick enough) you could snap your Texan bar in two without bending it.

Just slowly nibbling the chocolate off the outside of the chewy bit in the middle of a Texan.

Nibbling the chocolate off Jaffa Cakes and Penguin bars.
Sucking tea through Chocolate Fingers.
Tree Houses
Your Mum making your birthday cake in the shape of the number of you age.
Doing "diddymen" on the ice slidey on the playground in winter
Being allowed up into the attic with your Dad
Going onto Dad's work on a Saturday morning
Decorating the Christmas tree
Opening the doors on advent calendars
Being carried (sleeping) into bed from the car late at night

I'll spend all day in a dream now :)

I remember all those things.
And liquorice root, which we called 'Sticky-lice'. And 'Gobstoppers', which stained your tongue for a day or more, and turned your pee bright red. Or Horlicks tablets eaten like dolly mixtures. And, of course, in 1945, seeing a kid eating a banana in the street and wondering what the hell it was.
A 3d (1.25p) packet of chips which you could barely hold in one hand, which my mate would spit on so he didn't have to share any. And free 'crispy bits, and 'fingers', (battered chips).
I sometimes wonder whether 'the good old days' isn't a stupid expression after all.

And what about when Ovaltine was more than just a powder.
Pinching spoonfuls of condensed milk from the tin in the pantry and hoping it wouldn't be noticed.
Throwing home made 'arrows' 100yds. with the aid of a string sling.
Flying miniature box kites made from balsa wood and tissue paper.
Sitting for hours on the kerb watching ants rescue eggs from the nests you had disturbed with your foot.
Watching the 'Matthews FA Cup Final on a 9" B&W TV with a magnifying screen in front.

You have gone back way to far for me now!

I can remember the tracing paper toilet roll at school which seemed to rely on the principle of smeering it thin enough so as it wasn't noticeable rather than actualy removing it!

Rod operated brakes on my 1932 8HP Ford Popular. (Black, believe it or not).
Getting brake shoes relined, or doing it yourself.
And fitting and changing your own tyres.
Repairing dents and rot with 'Plaster of Paris' instead of proprietary filler. Bloody well worked for a while, too.
God, I'm getting old.

The summers were always six months long and the sun shined every day. Making a den in the local woods and staying there all weekend with a couple of mates. Going out to play could last for hours or until it was getting dark. If it snowed down here in Cornwall the school closed so we could enjoy it. Having enough pocket money to buy a half pound of sweets and not just a quarter - but what to have. The local sweet shop had every sweet in the world in big jars and there was nothing better than hearing them clanking into the metal dish of the scales. KFC was a treat and it tasted like nothing on earth - still true but for different reasons lol

Watching "Marine boy" No one else seems to remember it but it's on youtube (i found it!!) on a big old black & white telly eating marmite sarnies & drinking gold top milk.
Unsliced bread & the huge crust with lumpy jam was a treat.
Table manners, unheard of nowadays, ask to be passed salt etc. NEVER reach out for it, no elbows on the table, don't start your food until an adult has started theirs, leave your knife & fork tidily on your plate & ask if you can get down from the table.
General manners, please thankyou holding doors open etc. Respect for your elders & betters. It's not cruel it's basic upbringing.
Oh, being allowed a pen or sheath knife & although we all fought we never thought to use them for that. Fat lips, chipped teeth, ripped jumpers but you were mates again next day!!! :y

Have you said to your kids a phrase your Dad said to you, that you pledged you would never say? 'When I was a Lad' 'When I was your age' :)
Thing is I have 3 step sons 15 to 23 and at 15 or 16 there ability to look after themselves is / was nil. Cant cook, cant make a hot drink etc, swmbo too soft on them, but can you tell her............. :o
