Master Vamps little Saxo, that I paid £350, two trouble free years ago, is coming to the end of it's days.
He would like to buy an Astra and I am informed that we are going out over the weekend to try and find on.
His budget is around £3k so will be looking at cars in this price range, anything particularly I should be checking? it is a car I have had little experience with over the years, any advice / suggestions welcome.... :)

For that money you could get a very late nice spec MK4 or an Early MK5. From My experience avoid the 1.6 in the MK4. Inner tyre wear can be a problem. Creaky seats. Had no other problems with the exception of EGR faults.

Most seem to be the 1.6 or bigger, he says he got an insurance estimate of £1200 for a 1.6, spoke of this one.....

Dont know of any faults with the 1.6 but do go for the 16V and not the 8V as its a bit sluggish.
On the Mk4 check the off side front brake pipe for corrosion.
Not much goes wrong with them to be honest, pretty solid build quality.

Avoid any that have been chavved up!.
They will have been beaten to within an inch of thier lives!

That's reassuring, so not a bad car for a 19 year old then? he does not fly around or want to 'pimp' his car up like some of them do..... :y

He wants me to go and buy this one for him tomorrow, he is working 7 days a week at the moment, I said I will go and look, test drive etc and then ring him, seems that I am buying it and he is paying me back at £200 per month.... :D ::) ::) ::)

If I were buying a Mk5 Astra now, it would have to have the 100bhp 1.7 CDTI engine in it. Maybe I'm just getting old! :-\ ::)
