Title: Decisions decisions........???
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 27 September 2011, 19:18:03
Well I'm really confused now, dunno what to do really. Although I'm really impressed and have built up a fond liking of my miggy, I looked back to last winter..... The bad weather ie. 3 foot of snow near where I live and all the fuss and messin about it took me to get anywhere at the time in my wifes little Focus (my discovery was written off last October - Don't ask very touchy subject  >:( >:( >:( !!!). So I thought for this winter I'd either buy a tatty 4x4 with a few months tax & test on it to get me through OR go the whole hog & set about looking for a half decent 4x4 and replace the miggy with it.
Well I found a really good contender in a garage - Discovery 2 lpg'd. All the bells & whistles on it and only 68k on the clock. then dared to ask "what will you give me for the Omega?"  2.6 2002 cdx wi just 60k on it?????
Any guesses????  :-\

Anyway, thinks I'll be keeping it after that offer & struggle through IF it snows this year.

if budget permits buy 2 used studded winter tyres for rear (put rear 2 in urgent conditions) and 2 new winter tires  for front and go where you want :y

I have just gone through the exact same scenario, though I bit the bullet on the Mig and bought the 4x4...... :) :) :)

I was thinkin of goin down the snow-chain route??? dunno what others think? I was pretty cheesed off with the offer £750 'the best he could do' (my ar$e!!!).  I did think of tryin to sell it privately but I doubt I'd get rid of it in time to buy the Disco, Pity really it wont be there long   :( :( :(

snow chains are the cheapest way.. but not the easiest for some..  at least for me,  -10 celcius and frozen hands dont help either..

4x4's are so expensive to run even if you get a shed, looking at a grand to put a new set of tyres on a Range Rover. If we get another harsh winter, think I'd be looking at an Audi A8 Quattro for family T fleet

something like this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201136414677743/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/a8/make/audi/postcode/nn136er/radius/1501/page/2/quicksearch/true?logcode=p (http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201136414677743/sort/priceasc/usedcars/model/a8/make/audi/postcode/nn136er/radius/1501/page/2/quicksearch/true?logcode=p)

Prob could be had for £1.5k, should deal with most of snow we get, be a damn site better on road when there is not any!

I'd put a set of 15" steelies with winter tyres on ;)

Save normal wheels for normal use  :y

A grand for RR tyres?!?!?!?  :o :o :o

I've never paid that, I can get good premium make for £70-£80 a corner, well I did for my last disco. I'd love another RR though, just can't be ar$ed fettlin that bloomin air-suspension (first thing I do with em) its a real pita!!! Gonna have to have a heart to heart with the miggy, I might bite the bullet and advertise it yet, just to see if theres any interest.

RR size is: 255 / 55 / R19 for standard 19" Vogue wheels, cheapest branded is £202 or £180 for Toyo's

I've always used Generals on mine as they came well recommended, granted they aren't the same size as the ones you stated but given the size you quoted about £150 a corner.

I have just invested in some snow chains. The real problem will be ride height or lack of.  :'(

My '03 2.6 CDX with 80K miles cost me £735, so price is about OK. Thing is snow doesn't last that long really, is it worth all that hassle for a few days ?. Plus the fun factor from a 2.6 V6 you won't get from a 4X4  :y :y :y

Whilst there may be other expenses but the Jeep does more MPG than the Omega, same speeds and conditions.... :o :o :y

I do wonder where you get your ideas at times Tunnie?
"4x4's are so expensive to run".... I have a Land Rover Discovery 1, it does about 27mpg knocking about & 35mpg on a Motorway run. I paid £60 per tyre they were not Toyo's or Pirelli's but don't travel at warp factor...... Parts are suprisingly cheap.. I changed All the Coil Springs & Shocks for £238... is that expensive??

Range Rovers are not the only 4x4 mate  ;)

As for your Audi 8 Quattro well enough said  ;D

Indeed, if you want similar luxury, and only half the problems at a third of the price buy a JEEP....... :y :y
I also paid £60 a corner for new tyres, trade through the seller......who says I can do it again next time, whenever that may be.... :)

I would imagine the tyres will last you a while Vamps, they certainly do on a Landy :y

If I was to get a 4x4, have to be a RR. Disco's too agricultural in my opinion & makes my 2.2 look like a BMW M5 in comparison.

Audi A8 with winter tyres on, is almost unstoppable for normal road use, and for the 11.5 other months of the year when there is no snow, I know which one I would rather be chucking around the lanes  :)

Looked at Jeeps before, just not that keen on them.

Now Josh's supercharged RR, now thats the way to go 4x4  :)

A 1996 'P' Plate 4.2 Audi V8 cheaper to run than a 4x4  ;D ;D Remember in 1996 when fuel was about 70 odd P a litre fuel economy didn't really matter that much, but now  :o

Precisely. Unstoppable. If you can get it moving. ;D

No ground clearance, "laccy band" profile tyres (even winter ones) on huge rims and rock hard suspension, with all the weight hanging over the front axle. ::) Wouldn't be my choice of weapon, tbh.

That's before you consider what it would need in repair bills to keep it working.

They are not much worse than a 3.2 V6....

Kev, i'd ditch wide profiles when snow arrived and put a set of 15" steels with winters on.

Appears to cope quite well...
