Title: My other car written off
Post by: Stan_2 on 01 October 2011, 18:39:47
I had my old mk3 Granada stolen last week and is now a writen off (got burnt out), I informed the insurance company and now they want the registration document, M.O.T , and car keys.

I feel reluctant to give them the registration document, M.O.T as I feel I have no proof once they have gone, It was fully com insured.

Is it the norm to give documents to the insurance company before anything is agreed on?

Im no expert, but I would have thought you would give them the documents etc. after you hve reached a settlement, as it then becomes their car. :-\

I think it a good idea to photo copy everything you send mate. Keep photos to show thge condition etc as that can help when they offer you money.
Good Luck  :y

I would hold n to everything until a price has been agreed. It's your car, in whatever state it's in, until they have paid out.

Sorry to hear about your car. :(

Not heard of this before tbh. But recent events make me wonder, is my car actually mine, given the insurance companies approach.  :-\

The photocopy I think is the way to go, I’ll send photocopy’s of reg & M.O.T and see what they say.

Thanks for the advice.  :) :) :y

It was last Saturday it was stolen, the police woke me at 5:30 in the morning to tell me they found it burnt out, said I should go the and get any tools out of it I wanted.

I went there Sunday (about 4 miles from where I live) about 11:30 am and it had gone, I thought the council took it. Monday contacted council, no wasn’t them, so I thought the police moved it, no they didn’t either.

So I had to go through the procedure of reporting it stolen again, so within 24hrs it got nicked twice, unbelievable.  >:(

I think a scrappy must’ve had it the second time.

Anyone know how much car scrap is a ton?

I have encountered similar, best not to let the car out of your sight until you know what is about to happen. That way you can make a decision without being forced one way or t'other. Letting them take it away is the same as relieving youself of the resposibility.

When my beast was pranged first time round, the insurers wrote the car off after the 'take it to your nearest repairer' assesment. The independent assessor had not even viewed the car at that point. Alot less ball ache if it's kept away from the Write off register tbh. :-\

To the OP: handing over original docs is a big no no until you've accepted their offer. :-\

Update

I thought some might be interested, I spoke to my insurance company yesterday on what they would give me for my Granada mk3, 115k on clock, year 1990.

First they offered me £800.00, I said I’m not happy with that, it went quiet for a bit and he come back with £900.00, I told him I'm agreeing because it was giving me a lot a aggro.

So at the end I got £750.00 after they deducted £150.00 for excess, not a bad result.

I am now a happy  (http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/tiere/animal-smiley-021.gif)
