I've been considering a 2 door coupe project and can't make my mind up between a Rover 220 coupe turbo or 2.5 V6 Calibra. I'm leaning more towards the Rover because of its rarity, price and the 200bhp but they are unreliable. Any suggestions?
-
Both have issues, the Calibras can rot around the rear subframe mounts.
Having said that the 220 Turbo coupe rots around most places!
I guess the Calibra is any easy option for a 3.0 upgrade or cams etc.
-
What about an early Astra Turbo Coupe
-
I would really love a Monza GSE but thats not going to happen :(
-
I passed a nice looking Monza down at Sealand Road Yesterday :y

What about an early Astra Turbo Coupe

E36 328is cheap and very good handling buy a manual the engine is bomb proof if maintained the suspension & rust is what theyre prone for so find one with no rust later 1997+ cars dont seem to rust much atall they're good fun and tunable for the cheap m50 manifold & decat brings a very descent gain! theyre also a very very good cheap track car that handles well the coupe's all have //Mtechnics suspension as standard allegedly!
-
should add that the BMW is very reliable and will run perfectly fine half dead! the cooling system must be in tip top condition on them aswell!!
the 328is with m50 manifold & dave f induction kit can net around 230 odd bhp
-
Hmm this is just over your guide price mate

oh god yes..... MONZA !!!!!!!!
-
if you want something you can just jump into what about a 406 3.0 v6 coupe
-
they're actually quite pretty..... BUT, it's it's a BIG but....
it's french.....
nuff said.
-
I would really love a Monza GSE but thats not going to happen :(
now that is a very nice car what about an opel manta gte if you could find one
-
Having had both, I'd go for a Calibra turbo over a V6. The V6's are very nose heavy and only FWD and 5-speed. Get a boost happy turbo and lock the transfer box for lots of ;D ;D ;D ... :y
-
why not get a 328is and laugh as the calibra gets destroyed and crashes upside down into a ditch on a twisty country road?
-
I know of a 3.9 Bitter SC thats up for sale. Always Manta coupes coming up for sale, if i see anything i'll let you know
Andy
-
I would love a Monza GSE but it would have to be a manual and another consideration would be a TR7 convertible but i'd have to fit a V8 in it or a 3.0 V6, that would be a good project :)
-
Nice and cheap at the moment and I like the colour as well :)

since i found her in a field 18 months ago
Definitely worth an HPI check on that! ;D
-
Tomcat turbos are deadly and dangerous a very close friend died in one they have no safety systems of any description and if you roll it over your brown bread probo safer in a calibra?
theyre also in no means fast as theyre too dangerous!! and again wont keep up with a 328is coupe! turbo or not!
-
Mercedes W124 300 are cheapish atm and a timeless classic :y
-
meant a W124 or should i say a R124 the original e class coupe! :y
-
Well, MONZA, MONZA , MONZA......
i really like the idea of a converted 3.6 12valve or 24valve lump, out of a late Sennie or Carlton , popped in to a Monza.... on a manual box with the Police spec LSD , from the later motor..
Yum yum.
that'll do me for xmas.
-
mind you FINDING a 3.6 might be tricky....
i bet some bugger on ABS has one stashed away somewhere...
-
why not get a 328is and laugh as the calibra gets destroyed and crashes upside down into a ditch on a twisty country road?
Where the hell did that come from??? :-\ ::)
-
2.5 V6 Calibra.....but I'm biased ;)

I know Rovers haven't got the best of names and no disrespect to Del but I would rather get in a bath with a gay rugby team than drive a BMW ::)

want one ?
I have such a beast and it could be yours for little money. Can you weld ?
-
Need to sort out the most important question first - rear-wheel-drive or wrong-wheel-drive. Then it all becomes plain-sailing.
wrong-wheel-drive :-
Mazda MX-3 ( 1.8 V6, obviously )
Calibra ( as long as it hasn't got the spoilers, or you'll look like a chav )
Audi TT
VW Corrado
rear-wheel-drive
Porsche 944
Jag XK or indeed XJ-S
Opel Monza
Monaro
BMW E36 ( if you can bear to look like a t*at )
I'm sure I'll think of others.....
-
I used to love the looks of the Corrado (I'm sure that had something to do with the natty pop-up spoiler and the fact that I was young..).
Opel Manta?
Datsun 240/260Z? (if you're good at welding!)
Datsun 510
Datsun Skyline (can you tell where my interests lie? ;D)
-

Yep, it won't win any awards for being the tidyest but its solid enough. Tell me more ;)
-
I love the 240Z :-* but I suspect finding a solid one is wallet-lightening.
Supra perhaps? Straight 6 with a snail? What's not to like? If you like to weld.. ::)
Volvo 480ES? Don't see many of those these days thankfully.
MX6 V6?
Scimitar GTE (join lozz and drop in an X30XE)?
-
I just fancied something a bit rare and the Rover coupe turbo was the most powerful Rover produced and there's not many left these days ::)
-

Yeah, most of them are rotten to the core by now, and the ones that aren't fetch big money (I remember the Nissan dealier in Slough had a fully restored 240Z in, a few years ago, for over £20k).. but lovely cars, one day I might pick one up (once I've learnt to weld!) and drop an LS7 in it...

MX 6 v6 not as quick as you'd think,but with a probe 2.5 v6 plumbed in I reckon it would tramp :y

the Rover coupe turbo was the most powerful Rover produced
really???
good god....

I thought "never....", but then again it's probably true.
Oh hang on a minute, what about the ZT180
-
OK - the Monza....
it's a C-plate Monza with all the stuff you'd expect from a GS/E. So that's LCD instruments, manual with LSD, the "crazy-pattern" interior, etc.
last used in 2005 and stored outside in a field since. It's all there, but some welding to do.
Delivered to you for £500 all in.
I'd like to include a photo, but I'm in Northumberland and it's in Lincolnshire, so it's a tad impractical.
-

Oh hang on a minute, what about the ZT180
Rover 220 Turbo was 196bhp, the ZT V8 was 260hp, all other models were less (the V6 had 190bhp).. in terms of peak power, anyway.
According to Wikipedia ;)

Rover and MG ;)
-
ZT V6 was MG, but they did put the same 4.6 V8 in the 75 and leave it badged 75, that would have been most powerful Rover made? :-\
-
The V8 Vitesse was about 190BHP IIRC
-
256bhp according to Wikipedia...

Pfft, same difference to most people :P Fair point, though.. plus the ZT wasn't a coupe, and that was one of your criteria..

So they did, I forgot about that one. I'll get my coat ;D

Close the door on your way :D :y
I'd vote Monza GSE too actually, pickup a nice 24v Senator lump, drop that in :)
Rover Coupe just screams chav to me. But thats just my 2 pence :y
-
Manual Monza, now that is VERY tempting!
As for the V8 Rover 75, dont, just dont :(
-

good god....
I think back then the most powerful Rover was the 800 vitesse sport which ISTR had 220 bhp but as said the R75 v8 has that trounced
-
Where's that edit button ::),I used to own a rover 620 ti,that was 200bhp and quick :y
