Title: Winter Tyres
Post by: Figureman52 on 06 October 2011, 22:21:56
Need some replacement tyres, finances are stretched and am thinking about a set of nearly new wintrac xtreme for about £100.

I am presently only doing about 3000 miles a year, nearly all town driving, the trip computer shows a two year average speed of only 14 mph!

What does anyone think of running these tyres all year round?

I drove a Passat back in the summer which still had winter tyres on and grip was noticeably worse as was road noise

Such low mileage, in areas that are, usually, the first to be cleared, would make me ask just why you are considering winter tyres at all ???

TBH I doubt it is really worth it in your circumstances.

Just down to price, £100 for a set. I was also considering accelera alphas or autogrip for a similar amount of money.

any winter tyre thats used whole summer will lost at 1/3 of its useful soft layer and will harden because of sun..

but if using them for only 2 years  efficiently is acceptable then go for kumhos..

they have 2 models of winter tyres..  one is more suitable for average roads (snowy and clean road)  where the other is definitely designed for snow and ice..

but must add miggy is really heavy (and not fwd)  for this reason  I'm suspicious about the success for those light winter tyres on snow/icy hills  :-\

I've had several sets of them and had little problem in the winter, although I think that may be more down to my driving style and preparation in the snow :-\ :-\

In a similar price range to the Alpha's are tyres called Neuton NT5000. Only available from the sole importer (Neo Brothers Saab) either through eBay or direct. I'm trialling a pair on the rear and another member (MaxV6 IIRC) has just bought a full set. Still undecided (personally) as they are on the rear but they are M+S rated. Neo use them on their track car too :-\

Depends... I fitted them as a compromise due to future planned work so didn't want to trash a £5-600 set of tyres but I may be tempted to give a full set a go when all the work is completed
