You wont find anything truely legal for mp3 encoding as the mp3 royalty is based on encoding (rather than decoding)

How come the LAME project wasn't shut down long, long ago, then? - http://lame.sourceforge.net/

Quite simple, its only available as source code so not functional. Its when its compiled and used that the royalty becomes payable. They state very carefuly that it is for educational purposes only.

The MP3 rights are owned by the Fraunhofer institue and they charged based on encoder use.

There you go:

Quote
The LAME developers state that, since their code is only released in source code form, it should only be considered as an educational description of an MP3 encoder, and thus does not infringe any patent by itself when released as source code only. At the same time, they advise users to obtain a patent license for any relevant technologies that LAME may implement before including a compiled version of the encoder in a product.[3] Some software is released using this strategy: companies use the LAME library, but obtain patent licenses.

Im fairly sure I have a stand alone Sony Ericsson Program that will do that (a few hard drives ago), seem to remember it would pretty much convert most audio formats to all as long as you had the right codecs installed.

Cant remember if it was free or one of those 30 day jobbies, but worked really well for what I was trying to do, I'll try and dig it out if its still needed.

Chris.

Reminds me I need to install all the Creative stuff on the childrens computer, and it needs a new PSU as a DVD drive failure took it out.

Lots of software includes MP3 encoding.
