Right occationally when driving around the engine stutters just briefly as if a mis-fire has occurred (that the only way to describe it)
It happens intermitantly and has no common event (Hot / Cold / Fast or Slow speed)
Can go days without it happening or two or three times in one trip.
Noticed it usually happens when I back off the power then accellerate again, the car then slightly hesitates and then picks up again??
Any ideas..
BOG STANDARD car, only 62,000miles

do you buy your fuel from the same place?
try some injector cleaner/
when was the fuel filter changed?
have you checked the plug wells for water or oil?

Pay attention 007. It's a 2.2 DTi ::)

Well seeing it doesn't have plugs.. That's that one out of equation.
Car gets a full VX service when it requires in accordance to the service book.
So if memory serves right it had a fuel filter change March.
Will have a go with some injector cleaner next week.
Any other ideas?

Seems to be quite a common issue. As you say if you keep on the throttle it doesn't happen, it's only occasionally when you release the throttle.
I replaced the EGR valve in mine and it seem to lessen the problem but not totally eradicate it. I'm tempted to clean the inlet manifold but haven't quite got round to it.
I was a little concerned that it may be fuel pump failure but i've done 30K in my current DTi without issue, I do however put 300ml of 2 strike oil in the tank with every full tank of fuel to help lubricate the pump after lots of advise on here.

Dont want to alarm you but i was having same problem and i put it down to blocked injectors, till one day it broke down while overtaking.Turned out swirl flaps had been breaking up and being sucked into cylinders resulting in 3 bent valves.Hope you dont have same bad luck.

How easy is it to remove the swirl flaps? I know you can buy blanks to replace the removable ones on BMW's.
