as the winter is in front of the door I decided (some time ago) to refurb the winter wheels..
but made 2 mistakes because of painter >:(
he delayed the process nearly a month and I start to do them..
and he used paint solver on their surface as they were painted before..
but didnt continue as he was busy.. so paint became hardened than the original..
and must say using paint solver or stripper in any paint job is a deadly mistake (unless you dont trust the old base coat) because any base coat applied on metal surface will never be like the factory applied..
also as its very strong its extremely hard to clean this layer which cost me many days of work.. >:(
if you are going to do the same job, only clear the old paint by sanding and re-paint it..

I also cleaned the inside :P :P
-
also must note they must be deeply scractched for the base coat to stick properly..
I use 100 for work and 60 grid for final scratches..
also inside part and holes were trouble so I used a metal brush with machine..

I will.. :y
next phase will be using epoxy on the surface.. (although epoxy not required for alloys it sticks to surface better than anything and very close to factory base coat in strength.. my painter now turned to epoxy completely as the new type base coat/fillers caused him too much trouble.. (but if you use this material please wear a mask)
from my previous experiences a well prepared surface is must for a paint..
if you look the pictures carefully I scratched them deeply.. this will prevent them from flaking when stones hit..
also I will use special type laquer.. and the tire shop knows how crazy I am for paint ;D :-[

I know what Mrs TheBoy would do if I did that sort of work in the house ;D
Looking good so far, keep the progress pics coming :y

thanks Den :y
today prepared the final color and applied on test card.. paint is prepaed as 1 kg..
0.5 kg directional white (shows diffent color from different angles depending on the mixture),
0.5 kg pearl white,
1 gr of blue >:( / I did say 0.5 gr to the shop but the bloody idiot added 1 gr.. and mixture became more bluish.. :(
tomorrow or weekend will take half of it and add another 250 gr 250gr from whites..
then probably try another 0.5 gr silver for the tone..am I crazy .. yes ;D
besides another 0.5 kg pure white base coat is also prepared, as the final color is some kind of transparent..
still not decided on the final color.. :-\

Albs, no need to move the base/primary coating.. I did it because , once we started with paint stripper .. normally removing the last layer was enough..(my bad luck was they were painted before)
probably you know, if you are not going to use a thick base coat, dont go numbers below 800 for sanding or sanding scratches may appear.. dont hurry ,be sure every point to be sanded..tire touching surfaces must be cleaned very well.. but after paintng is finished let dry for few days depending on the temperature.. then sand the laquer on the tire touching area (not completely but vertical as much as possible)..
-
or as an alternative sand with 400 then pass another time with 800 or 1200.. :y
-
also one more important point, for painting a mini spray gun is used as they spray less and easier to control on complex surfaces (and avoids paint flow)
-
after sanding the colored base coat with 1500 on all parts including covers , final coat and scratch resistent laquer applied yesterday at 6 pm.. and the result:
today rainy so this is more close to actual color but under sun its stunning

as the laquer layer dries very late they will be left for drying another week

winter wheels finally on the car ..
-
Look very nice indeed Cem.Im in the middle of doing my final wheel (brought it to work with me today) ::)
Im quite pleased with the results on the other three Ive finished. Not quite up to professional refurb standard, but good enough for my car and a hell of a lot less expensive. ;)
I thought when I saw your thread that I should have remembered to take some pics of mine before I started work on them. They all needed quite a bit of sanding etc.and one of them was in a terrible state. It took a lot of work to prep for painting.
Will take some pics when they are all finished. :y
-
nice work there cem but do me a favour,STAY AWAY FROM THE KERBS ;D :y

seems you also like that refurb job.. ;D waiting for the piccies.. :y
I started on another for miggy (larger size) ;D but these are quite detailed and very hard to sand :-\

;D I will.. definitely :y
-
and must admit putting the tires on these wheels without any lever and machine was a nightmare.. only bare hands used.. but required to heat the tires in front of the stove and using some detergent..
-
An excellent job, Cem. Well worth the effort for the finished product.... :y :y :y :y :y
