Its that time, new Cat back exhaust for the 3.2..
Do I go for a Jetex stainless steel at £458 (or £494 fitted) (twin pipes all the way) from the local Demon Tweeks
Do I go for an ebay jobby at about £130

I dont want too noisy, as near standard as possible

I accidentally bought a 2.2 Estate Exhaust a couple of months ago...
found 2.5 / 3.0 one here:

Got Eternal on both 2.2's - Sound fine, very close to GM. Given Omega is all about quite cabin, i'd vote cheapo rather than stainless which will always be noiser
-
Thats a big difference in price and see as our cars aren't worth much thesedays i would go for the cheaper one (or get 2nd hand genuine?).
-
Link above was eternal btw.
Radar - Genuine ones no longer any good, about 5 years go they went shite, no better than eternal.
-
Oh no
-
They used to be double walled, really decent quality & worth going for. Now they just ship rubbish, they don't even put chrome tips on the tail pipes any more :(
-
I understand, as a longshot i suppose one of the breakers on here might have a double walled one in good nick - could put an ad in the wanted section?
-
aye, at £130 if I dont like it....it will be knackered in 2 years or so anyway
on the stainless, its an expensive mistake if I dont like it.
-
the newest decent GM are too old to fit now imho
-
with the project, i've re-patched the old school genuine one to last a bit longer. But for replacement, it will be eternal + stainless pipes. I rang around, can get one welded on for around £50

I've got a Cat back Jetex stainless system on my 3.2 estate. It's well made and the hangers were all in the correct positions and it was a doddle to fit. It is definately not noisy, just a very slight boom on acceleration but at normal driving speed you will not hear it. I got my mate to do a fly by in my car and it sounds similar to standard exhaust from outside. As Andy B has previously said, the tailpipes could be conceived as a bit chavvy at twin 3" exits but I'm happy with it. I would have preferred it to be profiled to bumper, but hey ho, such is life. I soaked my downpipe bolts in plus gas and only the rear end was needed on ramps. Mine's been on a while now with no problems. :y
The only bit of advice I would give you Jimbob, is to make a video of it running with just downpipes fitted. They sound awesome ticking over. ::) ::) ;D ;D

Alan

Thats some very handy info, cheers.
At times mine sounds like its running on just down pipes :D
Any 'motorway drone' at all?

:o
That's a lot for a 10 minute job.
Alternatively, just get some trim finishers from Halfrauds (or, as in my case, Aldi) and fit them with jubilee clips. :y

Trouble with those trims I've not found many that work with twin pipes, also prone to falling off.
I like idea of the pipes being cut back, and stainless twin pipes welded on, will look close to the genuine & be solid.
Be a lot cheaper if i had a welder & knew how to use it :-[

Watching this thread with interest ::) ::)
If you go down the Jetex route I'd be interested in another opinion of the sound, particularly on motorway and idle :y :y
-
Certainly, ill keep you posted :y also, may want to 'meet up' if your still available with the new venture?

That's more of a challenge :-[ :-[
Although, if things go to plan I'll have a little time available in the new year ;)
-
thought that may be the case, no worries, if it comes off, great, if it doesnt, not the end of the world :y

Can easily be done with the others though ;)
Alternatively, I may have a unit available to work in soon :-X ;)

I kept the stainless ends from my original exhaust with that in mind, but then found some trims that were pretty much identical, and it saved polishing up the old trims.
Ok, one of them has fallen off due to a dodgy jubilee clip :-[ but I caught it before it got lost.
Theboy has a welder and it'd be the ideal "learning" job, IMHO. ;)

fyi : £314 on Tradeclub now !!!
-
Couple of quick tacks and it wouldn't even need to be pretty.. I reckon even I could manage to
stuff that up do that ;)

Any 'motorway drone' at all?
The best way that I can describe it is once the accelerating 'load' has been achieved and the car is rolling at comfortable speed, the level of 'boom' goes. Jetex are not noisy pipes. There is no 'drone' on normal roads or motorway and the level of boom when accelerating is more than acceptable. On previous cars I've had stainless exhausts from the likes of Powerflow and on a long journey they get on your wick. Jetex on the Omega is definately not like that. At normal cruising speed you would not notice much difference. Any boom is limited to acceleration only. On tickover, you would not know any difference as it is quiet.
James (Twiglet) heard it ticking over and revving at Billing and I got the impression that he thought it was too quiet for a 'sport' exhaust. I think he expected a growling monster and was sadly disappointed. ;D ;D
Pity we are not nearer to each other so that you could hear for yourself.

I missed a previous post where you were enquiring about a Jetex system. Sorry about that. :-[ Our paths nearly crossed at the Wycombe meet when you had just aquired your estate. My car was super polished and I was about to leave for Wycombe when it started to rain. As my car was spotless, I sulked and stayed at home. Really regret that now as it turned out a great venue. :'( :'(

No worries Alan... There's nowt wrong with my exhaust at the moment, apart from the fact it's an aftermarket system so a bit "Droney", so it's low down the list of priorities ;)
Of course, the plans could all change if I ever manage to find a full Irmscher kit for it ::) ::)

Jimbob - I bet Eternal haven't stopped supplying Estates, its likely they are just currently out of stock. They are normally unable to tell you when stock is arriving.
I have an Eternal on the MV6, coming up to 2 years old, absolutely delighted with it for the money. The number of Omegas that turn up here, and to meets, with droning exhausts due to the tat that the likes of Timex/Walker churn out.... ....and I couldn't live with that drone, its tiring and nausiating.
The Eternal ones, IME, are every bit as good/better than the current GM ones. And at around £120 delivered, is a no brainer.
If you can patch yours up until Eternal get in the ones you want (normally 2 or 3 week wait max IME), I don't think you'll regret it. Hellfrauds do some great shite for bodging exhausts, as I'm sure tunnie will confirm (as long as its not the pipe coming adrift from the boxes). If you need the details, I'll go to garage to check what it is...

Im not so sure, been watching eternal, nothing in estate in about the last 6 months :(
-
that said, a phonecall wont hurt in the morning.
-
Have just bought 2 estate centre sections for 3.2 estate from eternalcar,£27 each plus 16 postage.Already had a rear box.Nice clamshell design and just as good as the factory fit.You may need to call them or email your enquiry.
Also have 2 3.2 saloons with the full eternalcar system now for over 2 years and excellent results so would highly recommend.

I know people who have recently bough estate exhausts from them recently :-\

yup, and thats all ive seen in stock for ages.
Ive heard from another member that eternal and neu car parts both supply exactly the same parts.
still torn between that and stainless, given I rarely change cars.

That's my dilemma... This one is here to stay so stainless may be a sensible option :-\ :-\

This is what I have advised in the past. It's only three little tacks that hold the originals on. That way you can keep the same bumper profiling as well and they are slash cut which I prefer. The Eternal one definately needs stainless finishers on to finish them off.
As previously mentioned, I fitted cat back Jetex stainless a few years ago and it is definately not drony or noisy but I can see peoples reluctance to spend around £500 on a car that is not worth thousands. Some people buy cheap tyres, others buy brand names (me). Some people buy aftermarket parts, others buy genuine parts (me again ;D ) Personal choice at the end of the day. Only that person knows what is financially best for them. :y
I took the Jetex route as they fabricate a copy of the original exhaust. The middle boxes are the same shape, the rear box is the same shape and they still manage to get twin exits to look decent and keep the noise levels down.
As said Jimbob, pity I'm not closer to you. What will win, your head or your heart. ;D ;D :y

I think I am swaying towards the stainless.
I dont chop and change cars, I buy one, and look after it well until I feel it is really uneconomic etc.
I am looking at a long life out of this yet, and also looking to LPG as well.
A lot of my trips are very short, I know this is not good for exhausts, and feel the cheap steelies wont take kindly to it, the stainless is guarantee'd while I own it.
My current back box is gm, with added ventilation, Ill be keeping the chrome ends regardless, you never know when they will come in handy.
-
In a slightly selfish way :-[ Good! ;D ;D
I'll be able to get feedback from someone else before committing too ;D ;D
-
Ljay took my car to work today....sounded like a tractor as she drove off :( really need to order something.
At least I have hers, with an old style, good, genuine GM system to compare it to, So may be able to record some decent comparisons.

Know your problem, shortly after I got Miggy went through all the hellish drone problems
Then had 2 failed replacement options including a new GM replacement
Finally went along with a member's advice and went to a firm who specialise in custom fit exhausts
Asked them to do a nice quiet exhaust with rolled edge twin tail pipes and also do the O2 sensor mod
These specs they did although I was worried by the fact the system has only one centre box
They reassured me this was Ok and commented that the simplified spec was much better
I've since found this to be correct when working under Miggy
I had this done in Jan2009 and since had a nice quite exhaust without problems
In fact the exhaust contributes quiet a bit to the pleasure I get from driving smoothy Miggy
Must admit the cost at the time of 481.85 stung a lot
Suppose if you intend as I do to keep the car then it has to be worth it
The work I think was done through a franchise called Longlife Exhausts by a local firm Tony Banks Longlife
Might be worth trying a google Exhausts.Longlife.co.uk hope you get it sorted Ok
-
So many conflicting stories out there! gonna end up a coin toss at this rate ;D
Dont have a problem with the value of either, most worried about making an expensive mistake...
Firm believer in buy cheap, buy twice. Dont want to risk it the other way either!
Pity theres not someone local with one.
-
Might be worth drive down south to YZ250, get much better picture seeing it in flesh so to speak. Also given the cost of stainless system? Worth the petrol tokens?
-
at about £80 in petrol....prob not to be honest....
I must have heard AndyB's etc, and never been aware of a problem.....but drive past and living with are very different things.
-

I'm not that far from The Boy (or Tunnie when he's visiting the homeland) but if I demo'd it to them you may not trust their opinions. Hmmm ;D ;D
Not sure how I can help otherwise as a video clip may not give the right impression. :-\ All I can say is that on previous cars in my youth I've had Peco, Powerflow and various other makes and found them all irratating on a long journey. The Jetex is not like that, otherwise it would be for sale on here. ;D ;D ;) ;)
Where's Andy B when you need him. ;D ;D He's got the same pipes as me on a saloon. Assume noise level would be similar. :-\

Regarding exhausts - has anyone ever used these people?: http://www.onlineautomotive.co.uk/ :-\
-
Thats very interesting....youve found others annoying, but not the Jetex....thats nice comparative info :y
-
Thoughts...
GM current crop of tc systems. Way over priced £314. For the life of them they need to be cheaper than eternal. About half the price actually. Quiet, but not as pleasent a noise as oe.
Find a nice back box, possibly used irmscher or similar make on ebay, with othet eternal type mid sections if available?
All the stainless custom systems "i have heard" are overly loud ime.
No experience of jetex.
-
I bit the bullet and bought a new irmscher back box from German eBay for my 3.2 estate. Needed some dikkin about to ensure free from towbar but working fine with GM centre sections. When they give up the ghost will replace with joe normal stainless as, by that time, will be the last time I will be doing it.
Couple of hundred for the back box, about half that for future replacement centre sections from local stainless supplier.
Sound is, to me, near standard with a pleasant rasp when booted. It, to. E honest, that's not what this part time pensioner is currently looking for anyway. :y
-
Cheers, knew you had been looking, didnt know what you ended on, never think to check german ebay :y
-
Give these a call, i've heard good reports about them and not to far away ;)
