I've recently had a dispute with some people who owe me money. >:(
Over the last 6 months I have repeatedly tried to negotiate a settlement and have offered a good discount to keep it out of the courts. They refused and so I took them to court and got a 'forthwith' County Court Judgement for the full amount owed, plus interest and all my costs. 8)
This was about 2 weeks ago and until today I had heard nothing. So I was preparing to take the next step ie bailiffs or a charge on their house.
They have contacted me today and have made me an offer, which is less than what they owe me, without the court costs and interest!! >:(
The stupid thing is that, had they been sensible and sat down with me 6 months ago, I would have settled for a lot less than what they have offered me today..... :o
And here's the thing.... I know for a fact that they have the money to pay as they had a large inheritance. They bought their house in February for cash, bought a newish car, went on holiday to Greece for 2 weeks in June and had about £1500 worth of fencing put round their garden in August........ Maybe it's me who's stupid..... :-\

I would tell them to stick it and demand full payment. If they were in difficulty financially then I may have looked at other options but if they can pay then give them a 2 week ultimatum and send in the baliffs
-
Send in the
dogs bailiffs, dont hesitate, dont mess about. >:( No Brainer !!!!
If they wanted to offer they would have done it before court.
Do it for all the others they have probably ripped off.
Do you know who did the fencing. Did they get paid ???

They're taking the 'Proverbial' mate! Take them for every penny owed!! :y

If you start negotiating with them now, the likelyhood is that they will run you round in circles forevermore. You are holding all the cards now. They had their chance to be reasonable and didnt take it. ;)
-
Negotiate?? No chance!!! >:( They've had their opportunity for an easy way out and they threw it back in my face!! I'll take them all the way now...... In the 'good old days' there used to be debtors prisons for the likes.... ;)

They don't deserve your goodwill. Demend what the courts have ruled you are owed and not a penny less.
-
If they were genuinely in difficulty, thats a different matter, but paying off debts must always come before 2 weeks in Greece.
So, seeing as they can afford holidays and home improvements, send in the baliffs for the full amount, inc all costs.

They were in genuine financial difficulties, which is why I helped them out and they come to owe me the money. It was when I found out about their inheritance that I told them to pay me back, then they denied owing me anything!! They lied about where they were living, so I tracked them down, and then found out that they had bought their house for cash!!! We did at one point make an agreement for payment by installments and they gave me a cheque for the first payment and then promptly stopped the cheque!!! >:( Hence the legal action!!!
I've been reading up on bailiffs and it seems that they're abit toothless really. You don't have to let them in, they can't force their way in, and they even let you know they're coming so you get time to clear your stuff!! Probably down to yuman rites or sumfing!!! >:(
I think I'll go for a charge on their house. There are others chasing them as well, so the courts will probably force them to sell the house eventually! :y I reckon their plan has been to buy the house and then spend the rest so that they can continue claiming benefits... >:(

nail their scummy hides to the wall.

They have tried it on and obviously the seriousness of the situation (now hold a court order) has finally dawned on them.
As Albs said, if you renegotiate now you are shooting yourself in the foot if they decide to mess about again.
