Got a wierd grinding & squeeling noise comin from the rear near-side wheel and atributed it to the handbrake / shoes bein knackered or seized after experimenting with the h/brake for a while. Anyway jacked up, wheel off, slackened off h/brake cable, then tried to slacken off shoes with the adjuster. Followed the guide in the maintanence section, but I can't get the bloody disc off (removed the retaining screw). I imagine its never been off before (60k only) and the h/brake is probably seized, but i've been quite patient with it and tried everything bar 'if everythin else fails BIG hammer'. Am I missing anything ???? before I completely loose patience & muller it!

I would've smashed the c**p out of it by now! But then, I do have a full brake kit waiting to go on.... Good luck....

Have you adjusted as far as possible? And going the right way??

I'm sure I've backed it off the correct way, leaving it till tomorrow now. I have got replacement parts ready & waiting to go on, I just didn't want to let the hammer loose just yet ::) Perhaps a clear head in the mornin might throw some light on it, if not I'll start threatening it with brute force :o

I'm guessing that the shoes are stuck... Did you try hitting the drum with a large, soft hammer a few times and rotating it?
You probably have a lip or (more likely) the shoe lining has came unbonded and is snagging.

This is what happened to my wife's Renault (it's ok, she's come to VX now :y) and she took the thing to the dealership to fix and they bent AND cracked the drum!

Yep Ld, I did give it a little gentle persuasion tap and rotated the disc as much as I could. when I did it though it felt like sommat was catchin on it i.e. stoppin it from turning so I went back & forth with it. If the worst comes to the worst I'll have to give it a good shooin (not the best answer) just don't want to damage anything else. It would happen when I'm going away in it at the end of the week & I'm on nights ARRGGGHHH!!!!

My last Omega did that when the shoe retainer pin pulled out of the backplate.
I had just fitted new disc/drums and parking brake shoes so was aware that the backplate was a bit tired but I wasn't about to pull the axle out to fit a new backplate :(
It made a horrible noise but as the disc/drum was brand new a was able to remove it without damaging anything.

Well after a lot of huffin & puffin and turning the air blue........IT'S OFF!!!!!! :) :) :) Bloomin things had locked on to the drum & wouldn't let go chewed what was left of the lining off and there weren't much, started scoring the drum, that was the squeeling & grinding noise sorted. >:(
Anyway, all cleaned up and replaced now, other side more or less fell off to make things easier ::) Well new discs, pads & shoes all done. :y :y :y

Sometimes BFI is the way to go! :y Good job :y
