Put a new set of (OEM) pads on the other weekend and now I've got squealing brakes at 'normal' pedal pressure (if I push harder or gentler I can stop or reduce the squeal).
Any idea what could be causing it and, more importantly, how I can stop it?
Cheers,
Gaz

Trade club pads I take it? £14? ...oe are a lot more than that, and don't squeal.
Some might suggest copper slip on the backing, but it's a complete waist of time ime.
-
Oh, and if tc pads, mine and several others are the same.
-
Nope. Genuine GM pads.
-
Yes...?

See sig below \/

Yes...?
Well they came in a GM bag, from a Vx dealer!
I sort of took that as evidence enough!
-
Ahhh
GM do 2 pads.... known as TC (trade club) or OE (original Equipment)
the TC ones are about a tenner from memory.
the OE are about £90, and some say they perform better, fade less and create less dust, The definately seem better made.
Which did you get?
-
Oh, and if tc pads, mine and several others are the same.
My pads are TC and don't squeal ................ ;) ;)
-
Defo the former - I only paid c£15! From AndyC.
My driving style these days never makes brake fade a problem (too concerned with the cost of fuel to go booting it round the countryside!) - and if they make more dust I'll just have to visit the carwash more often!
It's the squealing I'd like to fix if poss!
-
we run both I have OE currently, she has TC, neither squeal.
I have had a set in the past that did squeal though, cured by replacing.
I do use copperslip on them.

Must be the luck of the draw then!!

If they don't get any better on their own (I know they do sometimes) I'll dollop some on.

I don't understand the need to file them tbh. The shamfers are already enormous on the ones I've seen. Are there different suppliers of tc pad I wonder, just slightly different ways of making them to the same spec. maybe...?

Probably. The current TC set replaced a TC set that squealed like a pig! ;) ;)

Some fronts have the shamfer and most rears dont.
So its dependent on whos supplying VX at the time.

Copper grease has always worked for me on a wide variety of cars......unless really crap pads.
-
I had a squeal on TBE after popping on some new TC pads a few weeks ago. Done as a bit of an experiment for Mr Cynical (aka that gixer bloke)
Immediately cured a week or 2 later (after I knew it wasn't going to cure itself) with a smear of copper grease. These pads already had a slight chamfer, but I did file on a bigger one on the leading edge.

copper slip seems to do the job

did you notice any squeal Sunday morning? Apart from the shite tyres....
;)

...so any day now then...?
Although with all the other symptoms your clown car was showing, may as well chuck squeal in as well. ;D

hold up, those discs where rusty as fleck as I recall.

Now its behaving, NSR aside, I may treat it to some nice new shiny ones...
...then again, as I'm having myself some fun wrecking tyres, I might wait a couple of months until it has shiny new tyres
-
Might want to order a set of tyres before you kill that set, TB.. I tried buying tyres today only to find that every choice of make was 'out of stock and unavailable'.
Oh, except Chris' favourite make, Falken. I could have those tomorrow. If I wanted. Which I don't.
;D
-
don't you talk bad of Falkens! I think its the large organic mass behind wheel which is the problem ;D
-
;D ;D The giant bag of mostly water? (Reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paH97dYR6Lg )
I've not tried them on the Omega to be fair - I remember them being passable on the Renault, years ago, although the grip quickly went from "alright" to "I'm going to die at the first corner" as they aged.. Thus I still steer clear ;)
-
Grip has started to go with 452's on the rear of mine, 912's on front are better, but at 37k miles out of the front, not wear rate i have come to expect! ;D
Think as mine are 16's and low power, that makes a difference to 17's and a V6.
I'd put them on again my 2.2, no doubt, but with 3.2 I opted for the as yet un-tested Nexen N6000s

I think its likely these tyres will kill me first.

Gripped well enough in dry when i drove it? Although really feking loud buggers, not sure I could live with that noise!

Thats because you use Falkens normally ;)

How fast do you want to drive, did 80 down that road to Radstone in yours :o

No issues at 80mph in a straight line in the dry. Slowing down or changing direction is where the issues lie. In the wet, any speed, just accept you are going to die.
I'd rather have a Michelin than that Autogrip. Hence needing access to your garage to get another wheel ;)
-
You find that ok? Its it a bit of a mess in there :(

Yes, thanks.
Not fitted yet, so I class the Elite as off-the-road again.
-
If you need the Elite on-road, you could borrow the Nexens? As long as I get it back with most of the thread still on it ::)
