Title: Tomtom replacement
Post by: mantahatch on 26 October 2011, 09:18:59
I have had my tomtom 700 for quite a few years now and it is starting to loose reception, and take an awful long time to find satlites in good conditions.

So I thought it is time to replace it. But what with ? I do need the european maps as well so that usually discounts the cheap ones.

Any buying advice gratefully received.

Do you have a smartphone?

If so, you won't go far wrong with Google Navigation IMO.

Ah I have the HTC wildfire is it ? not the most expensive one and not the tiny cheap one.

Is it does have some apps on it, I will have a look for Google Navigation. Thanks

Will also google Navman, Thanks.

That'll do ya, Google Navigation is on the market.

Note that you will need a data connection to use Google Navigation as it will pull the map data "on the fly".
If this is an issue then you'll be better off with one of the paid for apps that stores the map data on the handset itself.
Below is a link to reviews of several SatNav apps for Android

The only issue with Google satnav is the data connection required, so its not a lot of use if your off to Cornwall and need it.

I use TomTom on my iPhone, but its GPS struggles sometimes, but thats because I mount it down low. Works very well on the bike, I just tuck it in my jacket pocket & use audio instructions

Plug it into your pc and let tomtomhome update it.....the most important file it will download to it, is 'quickfix' .This file updates the tomtom to tell where it should be looking to find the satellites.

I do this to my go700 everytime it starts taking ages to lock onto satellites and it sorts it out  :y

When last did you plug it into your computer and update the maps ect ?

I've had a tomtom one for 7 years now and was getting the same simptoms as you.

Spent a few quid over the summer and updated the maps and camera's.
"it had not been updated in about 5 years"
It now seems like a new machine  ;)

just a thought  :)
