For cat lovers, a petition https://submissions.epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/19369
And for those that don't love cats please no nasty comments as this is one subject I will take offence at.
Thank You.

i love animals i have a staff and a cat but to be honest i dont see the cat as a part of the family like the dog and cats are plenty round my way ripping open bin bags and making a mess 2 local idiots have just been prosecuted for shooting cats with a air rifle they are awaiting sentence but will probably only get a slap on the wrist
-
I dont love cats, I find them a bit chewy.

They will get a lot more than that if the right people find out who they are.

I might agree in principle, but I think these e-petitions are getting a bit silly.
-
We've owned a few cats. They are independent creatures that have a total inability to care about anyone or anything other than themselves. Moggies are not big on sympathy or empathy... :)

I actually agree with you, but it would appear to be the only way for the average people to have any say these days in what goes on.

Wow. The closest thing to a human then.

That says more about you that the cats :)
-
Are you viewing this from the perspective of the cat 'owner' claiming damages from the motorist, or the other way around?

Nothing more selfish than a cat with a full belly..... ;D ;D ;)

Personally I am looking at from this angle http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-15457756
For me no money could ever replace my cats, it is doubtful a cat would do much harm to car.
But for me it is all about the cats. Certainly it has nothing to do with compensation if that is the thought you are having.
-
We have had, and lost cats...
I dont think this legislation would make a tiny bit of difference either way to be honest.
in this culture, where there is blame there is a claim. this will help noone.
Those who care would, and will continue to stop and check.
those who dont, wont.

Agreed. People still drive around with phones clamped to their ears, so I doubt a change in law regarding hitting a cat will make any odds at all to their actual behaviour. It will cause an increase in Police workload processing reports for those motorists who do hit a cat and do report it. I can't see the Police doing much in response based on the last few times I've had cause to call them about humans let alone moggies.
So, the outcome is unchanged for both cat and owner, IMHO. :-\

whole my family love cats.. we feed 9 in home (also they go outside-inside whenever they want)
and another 13-14 outside ( we build some heat isolated homes where they can stay warm in winter) :y
-
I have a lovely cat, it's very affectionate actually, even when it's been fed :)
-
As much as I have a bizarre fondness for cats, self centered little buggers, I cannot agree with that petition.
This country is getting bogged down in red tape, I dont think it should be added to. Sorry.

I love cats and have just taken on a new kitten but I don't think the petition serves any purpose really, people who care would report it anyway and those who don't still wouldn't, our old cat died last December after 17 years with us and it was like a death in the family. :'( :'(
-
Should add the tunnies have had cats for the past two decades, we lost our last cat of 19 years recently too. At some point I think we will have cats again, we have 2 dogs as well, but house its not same without a cat :(
But I agree with others, can't see how this petition would make any difference, except increase red tape

How about removing the requirement to report a similar incident involving a dog. Would that not reduce the amount of red tape in the system?

I think thats because a medium size dog can quite badly damage a car so I suppose the driver has a chance of compensation if reported and dogs owner is traced

I like animals but don't "love" them if you know what I mean?
We have 2 cats and we've had them almost 8 years now. The oldest one was hit by a car in '06 and nearly died. Broken pelvis leg etc, with 2 weeks in a vets followed by a few months in a cage so she couldn't run around and hurt herself, she healed and is still with us today.
Although I agree with a lot of the comments on here and they are all valid to a point, cats still are a part of families and should be treated with as such.
On that note, I've signed the petition..... lets see what happens :-\

TBH I dont see whats wrong with reporting hitting a cat. Sure the likelihood of hitting a feral cat is higher than hitting a feral dog in this country but chances are ,if you do hit one, it is someones beloved moggie not a feral one. And -as most cat owners will tell you-they are as much a part of a family as any dog can be and a missing or injured pet (regardless of species) causes the owner distress. For similar reasons as to why motorists should report hitting a dog then, why not report cats also?Think it'd be taking it a bit far to try and "blame" the owners though in order to seek any compensation for damages to a vehicle! Oh, and please dont tell me that cats have inherently less road sense than dogs because they dont but theyre cats, not dogs , and theyre pretty hard to train! ;D I thoroughly recommend anyone who has not heard Eddie Izzards sketch about cats and dogs to have a listen :y
