Hi,
In trying to follow the excellent guide (and estimate of approx 1 hour fit time :-) I managed to easily disconnect at the top end electrical plug but the sensor removal at the bottom end on gerabox housing and next to the oil filter is proving stubborn and I am having no luck. I have chopped through the cable ok and I have successfully removed the star shaped bolt that hold s the sensor in place, but I cannot seem to pull out the old sensor. Am I doinfg something wrong...i.e does it screw out or just turn and pull and wiggle about until it is out completely??
Until I get over this hurdle...I have no vehicle to use !! Any other tips....should I drain the oil and remove the Oil Filter housing for improved access or is there any other 'Harry Potter' trick of the trade?.
Thanks in advance of someone hopefully offering a solution.

It should just pull out. Perhaps get a pair of pliers or a mole wrench on it and turn it back and forth a few times to break the seal?

Mine was a bit stubborn too, but finally gave way after a bit of punishment, lol :y

All this talk of pulling has got me all of a lather :D
what they said though turn it back and forth 9 oclock to 12 and back etc it will eventually then pull out.
Don't forget to route the wire of the sensor up behind the brake pipes :)

Loosen by twisting with mole grips, then get a small screwdriver between the lug and the block and lever as you twist it - should then pop out ok ;)

;D Just done mine and all you need to do to make it easier is to have the engine hot and give it a turn and pull with the molegrips. Once the torx bolt is out it is only the sealing O ring that is holding it. Dop not forget to route the cable as far awy from the exhaust as you can though.

I know this is going to be a stupid question but what would you expect from an office pen pusher :-), so apogies in advance...but one of the advice options was to have the engione warmed up to make the crankshaft sensor removal easier.
I have efectively ' chomped through the existing cabling for the crankshaft sensor so will the engine still start up ?
I haven't turned the engine over in case any damage is done? Sorry for the complete ignorance.:-)
Also I am in Sweden working currently and I'm not back again in UK to fix the car until 10th November, which will be my first task !!

I doubt the engine will start but it shouldn't be a requirement to warm it up. I have changed them on cold engines before, with the advantage that the heat from the exhausts doesn't take the skin off the back of your hands. Get a mole wrench in it and give it a waggle, and it'll come out. :y

Is anyone going to answer his question about draining the oil before pulling the sensor out...or shall we all have a chuckle when 6 litres of (hot) usefull dinosaur juice pi**es all over his drive. ?
Or not ,as the case may be.

I never bother draining the oil ;)

If the oil level were above the crank sensor I'd be really worried. ;)

I think the OP only mentioned draining the oil in relation to removing the oil filter to give better access, not because he was worried about oil pi$$ing out.
I might be wrong though. :-\

That said there usually is a coating of oil on mine when removed

Thanks to all who offered excellent advice.
I managed to replace the sensor successfully after gentle persuasion with a small set of mole grips !! All done without having to drain oil and remove oil filter casing for improved access.
I suppose if you have a car pit then this job is a real doddle but working underneath with only axle stands then the job is certainly more difficult.
Anyway, the car is running again fine with the new cranshaft sensor attached....I had almost forgotten what smooth acceleration felt like :-)
Incidentally, will the previous code 19 just clear itself after a number of successful starts and running or will the fault codes need clearing with a "My Naff Code Reader" reader device ??

I've changed them without even jacking the car up ;) But if it was your first one then it can be a little more awkward. Great news you've got it sorted though :y :y
As for the code... Keep an eye on it. It should clear after 20(?) clean cycles but I had a car that wouldn't clear it and frequently brought it back up even through 2 Genuine sensors. In fact, one of them is my spare now ;) ;)
